University of Phoenix can offer their educational services because most 17-80 year olds have to work full time nowadays. At the community college I have spent hundreds of dollars on books and classes and not gotten help or service from teachers or staff. Most community colleges exist as trade schools or for cast offs who could not get into the local state university that exists there or could not pay for the state school. The working adult has to attend community college part time. Part time over several semesters to graduate a 2 year degree can and has taken some people 6-12 years--a quote from students I've talked to.

UoP has cost me less time and money than the degrees I earned at state schools and a private grad school.

Think on it 21 months to an Associates in Axia or 2-12 years to an Associates at the cummunity college. Axia online and you can work full time and pay back your loans. I know people who are successful at this. Think about it.

Like the previous poster, the best anyone can do in the situation is READ THE PAPERWORK. Did you really think you would go to college for free? Not likely...

To everyone else.... before signing on with UofP, think about attending your local community college, state school, etc. Just on a whim I checked the tuition at several places. At UofP they charge $325/hr for associate-degree courses, and $515 an hour for bachelor-level courses. Really shouldn't make a difference but for some reason they can get away with it. I work for a private Catholic college, and our tuition is roughly $420/hour, regardless of the level of course. At our local community college the tuition is $123 per hour. Those costs are pretty comparable to others wround the country. Many community colleges are even cheaper!

Most college these days have pretty decent online programs. Since the main premise is being able to provide education for the working adult, most schools go our of their way to provide programs with integrity. I've heard so many complaints about UofP that I have to wonder...

I have been attending axia for almost 18 months and i am getting my associates this month and i have not had any problems what so ever. It is called read your paper work everything is explained. You can not go to school and not have to repay anything that is a crock! That is why they are called student Loans... I am countinuing my bacholars with Axia and wish everyone the best of luck. Next time dont expect something for nothing that is the problem here.

My daughter is due to graduate this November 2009 from UOP; The finance called her last week to discuss a $15k loan that she never knew she had. She was told by her enrollment person not to worry about the Banks on the form that it's just formality and that she didn't have to worry about paying anything back.

She would get papers from the Wachovia Bank about a loan. When she called her counselor, he told her, just disregard them, she doesn't have to pay anything back.

So, she went down to the Arlington, Tx office and they kept telling her, "but you signed" and she said, "yeah, but the enrollment guy just told me it was nothing that it's not a loan, just formality; for in case she did get a loan.

This company is ripping people off and needs to be stopped. I'm going to do every thing in my power to make sure my daughter does not have to pay this money back, and that this does not happen to others.

This also almost happened to me, I almost fell into it, but I backed out because we were moving and I wanted to also see about Military Spouse grants. But I do remember everything that he said to me and it was the same thing as my daughter

I'm hoping that someone from the Media will read this and want to talk to us.

i am new to this site and so could not figure out how to reply directly. but i have been talking to lawyers about this off and on; what they have told me is there's a case but to win isn't lucrative enough so they wouldn't help me. i would LOVE to help you out with this. please contact me!

I would like to respond to the couple of people here that claim they were scammed out of financial aid money. While this is likely untrue (and if it was, through University of Phoenix, you would not have been granted Title IV funding in the first place), I have a few suggestions:

- The amount of money that is returned to you depends on how you selected to manage your funds. This was completed on the FAW website through UOP, under Authorization to Apply funds. You either a. chose for the school to manage your funds or b. chose to manage your funds your self. Here is how each works:
Option A: The first half of your financial aid disbursement is used to pay for your first 12 creidts (tuition and books). This includes half of the yearly loan and half of the yearly grant. After that, you will receive the remainder.
Option B: The first half of your financial aid disbursement is used to pay for your first class/block and the rest is sent you.

- No school can hold your refund check, so you may want to check in to this further.

- In order to find out information about this, you will want to ask to speak to a finance MANAGER if you feel you were misadvised.

Also, in response to "Leah". UOP is not just a cyber school. In fact, there are numerous campuses throughout the nation. UOP was the first school to offer online learning. If you felt that you were wronged in this, I am concerned about your lack of research and understanding of higher education. A prime example of why college is so important!!

I am trying to get help in getting my money back or them paying back the student loans. They still have a pell grant that belongs to me. I with you about getting a class action law suit started on this school. Please read my report and get back with me and see if we can get something going.

According to Bryant & Stratton, this is not true, as there are people on very limited incomes and we had a student with learning problems. Occasionaly, she would fail a course and have to retake it. It did not affect her loan or her grants. She was even told by Bryant & Stratton that it would not, not to worry about it and retake the class.

Most of us do not have the means to pay these large amounts of money due to the fact that many of us do not even make enough money to meet daily living expenses right now. That is why we are in college in the first place, so we can be qualified for a job that pays us enough that we can pay back our loan and still afford to survive.

Also, many of us give a certain college a try to see if it is for them just to find out that if they continue down that course, their health will be at stake and have no choice but to drop that college. People have a right to choose a different college without having their own personal survival threatened with huge bills. Not to mention that UOA charges way too much tuition for their on-line courses.

I made a mistake thinking I could handle an accelerated course only to find out it is too much for me as it is not for everyone. I told them that from the start, but I was still highly pressured to give it a try. Well, I tried and almost ended up in the hospital as it was highly stressful. I am fighting with them right now to drop me and they are harrassing me. I am going to report them to the attorney general and fair trade commision.

OK, my first question is how you lost thousands of dollars. Just to let you know, the University of Phoenix, just as any other school, is bound by strict guidelines as to the disbursement of financial aid funding by the department of education. If you failed a class, yes, you will be required to pay that back. -It makes no matter what institution you are attending, the federal government will not give funding to someone who drops or fails a course. I am not quite sure how you can feel victimized when you signed legal documents stating that you understood this situation.

Well I only got back from the 815.50 and that's it. I have spoken with Sallie Mae about my loan with UOP, and they told me that it was processed and approved. UOP can't find it.

I am with you. The amount that I got from Finanical Aid and Pell Grant I have money left over and they are telling me that I own them.

I read your post and you stated that you had been ripped off by UoP for thousands of dollars, but yet you did not explain how this happened.
