Dear Attorney General Blumenthal,

Recently I purchased airline tickets online through Hotmail. Inadvertently, I chose a flight departing Hartford at 7:00 PM instead of 7:00 AM. (Swore I chose the morning flight) After contacting Hotmail within 24 hours of this error, I was informed that my flight (booked 6 weeks in advance) would now cost me an additional $150 per person. I understand the ticket is non-refundable, however, I am not asking for a refund, but simply to change the flight from PM to AM. At nealy 60 years old, I do make computer mistakes and had expected Hotwire to make the change without incident and they did not. I then contacted USAir.
I spoke with a US Air Supervisor and was told it's not only an additional $150 more, but there would also be another $59 fee, now totaling $209 per person. This is an outrageous amount to be charged for what my credit card company stated has been a common mistake made online. I simply can not arrive at 1:00 o'clock in the morning when one click of the mouse should have put me there for lunch.... yes, maybe my mistake... but this warrants you attention as other consumers are trapped in the mouse click and go dilemma as well. This could and should have been remedied by just simply allowing the consumer to verify and confirm flight information within 24 hours of booking, giving us the opportunity to make corrections and rectify mistakes, even if charged a small fee. This is not an unreasonable request from the airlines to insure the accuracy of our flight.
We contacted our Discover Card and was told they continuously have issues with airline tickets booked online. They would be happy to dispute the charge, however, we were told, the airline will win and we will be forced into purchasing a new ticket.
With the ease and convenience of computers and technology, the airlines are wrong for charging such an exorbitant amount and that the consumer is seriously being taken advantage of. A simple task, changing the flight time on the same day via the airlines web site would cost them virtually nothing. Also, $209 per person is nearly 35% more than purchasing an entire new one way ticket. So indeed, we are forced to pay for the flight a second time.
I am not expected to pay for a meal a second time at a restaurant if I ordered it incorrectly...
I am not expected to pay for clothing a second time that I exchanged for a different color...
Why am I expected to pay twice for an airline ticket because I (supposedly) clicked PM instead of AM...
I will be contacting the BBB, the media, consumer web sites and agencies to let them know that I have contacted your office with my concerns. Consumers are accustomed to reasonable fees, however, no one should not be forced into purchasing a second airline ticket because the fee to change a flight from AM to PM on the same day cost more than purchase of another airline ticket.

Respectfully,

Tina

What a Coincidence

AUTHOR: Karl - (U.S.A.)

The other day I made a reservation to Baltimore from Lubbock TX on Southwest Airlines. By mistake I made the reservation for the 10th of October instead of the 16th and recieved an email confirmation within seconds.

I immediately realized that I had punched in the wrong date so I called Southwest. I was talking to an agent within 3 minutes and she changed the date for me right away and sent me another confirmation. No charges at all. The fare happened to be the same. Southwest doesn't charge for changes unless the fare happens to be different. If you cancel you have a year to use the amount of your ticket for a flight anywhere Southwest goes. O

n American for instance there is a fee for change of destination and a $100 cancellation fee. Enjoy your flights on US Airways and haggling with a third party reservation service like Hotmail. Sooner or later everybody will fly Southwest or walk. There isn't much choice nowadays unless you are Bill Gates.

When Will People Learn

AUTHOR: Karl - (U.S.A.)

I quit using third party booking companies years ago. It is rarely more expensive to book directly with an airline on their web site and "Customer Service" on many of the third party companies is overseas where you might be lucky enough to understand an emplyee's English if you listen very closely.

Secondly the airlines are caught in the fuel crunch like everyone else but they can't just choose not to fly a particular trip. Every cancellation, change, or mistake costs you big bucks. It also costs you to now check luggage and Spirit charges you for a drink of water. You can, however, choose Southwest where you speak to a real employee in the USA if you don't want to make reservations on line, check luggage free, get a snack box for nothing on long flights, always get soft drinks and water without charge, and get the impression that somebody at Southwest actually cares that you chose their airline for travel.

Nobody else cares in my opinion except Southwest and Hawaiian. After deregulation competition didn't count anymore. People traveled based on fare and the cheapest fare to a destination got the passenger regardless of amenities or airline preference. Airlines are supposedly losing money and will charge you for anything they can. Griping to the BBB etc. will only frustrate you and sending letters of protest will only cost you 42 cent stamps. Make sure that you know what flight you are booking BEFORE you get on line. Write it down on a piece of paper. Don't click anything until you can see the itinerary in front of you. Obviously the fees charged for a mistake are excessive. Obviously the airline or third party booking company should change it for nothing. Obviously you made a common mistake and should be forgiven but it is not going to happen. Live with it or drive next time.
