June 29th 2005, I went to Valley Car Care and Transmission in Burnsville MN in order to change my oil and spark plugs and to purchase and install new tires. The owner Scott Brouwer discussed with me the price of oil change and the price of purchasing and installing new tires, but did not felt the importance of mentioning the price of changing the spark plugs. The owner told me to come back in approximately an hour and fifteen minutes to pick up my car.

I immediately called my wife and she picked me up on her way from work. Approximately two hours later not receiving a phone call from the owner, we decided to drive back to the car shop. Upon arriving the owner was still working on the car which took him another half an hour. He explained that the reason it took him so long to perform the job was because he had to use an adjacent shop's equipment to balance the tires. Upon receiving the bill the oil change was $11.00, the tires were $220.00, the labor to install them was $30.00, and the price for changing the spark plugs was $30.00. The did not expected the price of changing the spark plugs being three times as much as an oil change. I feel like the owner deliberately did not mention the price before installing them.

The next day the tires and the steering wheel were shaking violently when I was driving at about 60 miles an hour on a highway. I came back that same day and the owner said that he would take care of it immediately, but since his equipment was still not working he would use another shop's equipment. He asked me to wait in the lobby and it took him another two hours to finally get the job done.

While I was waiting, I observed one of his employee smoke a cigarette while changing someone else's oil. Also instead of taking care of my tires the owner decided to engage in selling his friend's vehicle to his customers. He was also chatting with people that were coming in the shop instead of taking care of the problem. The following day while driving to work, I noticed steam coming out from under my car's hood. I had to stop and find a local mechanic in order to see what the problem was. The mechanic told me that the person who was changing the oil did not put the cap back on the engine causing oil splashing all over the motor and other adjacent auto parts. He also warned me that there could be permanent damage to the engine and an engine dialysis should be performed.

The owner of the Burnsville shop, Scott Brouwer, did not think that an engine dialysis was necessary and he would not provide any warranty on the engine in the future. Now I have lost a full work day of pay and the possibility of having to replace the engine in the future because of lack of professionalism on the part of the owner. I am also very disappointed with the lack of respect for the customers and their time.

What do you think you should have been charged to replace the spark plugs? 30 bucks seems very if not cheap but a deal.
