I accepted a job from a Vons location in Las Vegas about a month ago. I had saved up EVERY penny I made to move to Las Vegas in hope of bettering myself. I was extremely fortunate that I was hired right away with Vons and for the first few weeks the job wasnt too bad
But after about two weeks, the job as a courtesy clerk proved to be very difficult, and definitely not worth the minimum wage I am paid. All in our 6-8 hour shifts we must bag groceries, get carts, sweep the store every 30 minutes, check the bathrooms every 30 minutes, drop whatever we are doing immediately to do a price check, or answer a customers questions, or take on whatever menial task the managers give to you
Our store gets so busy that it is impossible to keep up with all the responsibilities given to us and the supervisors usually come down on ME when it is not always my fault. Im by far from being an ideal employee but I do my absolute best to get my work done. One thing is if we offer carryout, apparently the supervisors time us. Just the other day some lady wanted to buy 36 (yes 36) 12 packs of soda and I helped her out to her car and it took a few minutes to unload everything into her car, and when I got back to the store one of my supervisors said "That was an AWFULLY long carryout" and I said "Yes but that customer had 36 cases of soda" She just gave me a look like she didnt believe me
Another instance on carry out service was I was talking to a customer after I had unloaded her groceries, and while I do admit I talk too much sometimes it was nothing to chew me out about, when I tried to explain it to another supervisor why I was gone she said I was a liar, and that nobody could find where I was. I was simply providing the best customer service I could, and talking to the customers is part of that. Apparently I cant talk to a customer but several other courtesy clerks can hide on the other side of the shopping center and talk on their cell phones and give me an added burden to my already overworked day, the managers find that totally ok.
Another instance I was talking to a customer in the parking lot while on carts and another supervisor said "Get you a s s in here, were slammed and you should be bagging groceries right now" she said this in front of the customer I was talking to. He went in and tried to defend me but she didnt go for it.
Im new to the whole mystery shop concept as well, something Publix didnt do back in Florida. I failed my mystery shop for "not leaving a parting comment" and for "not thanking the customer by their last name" And one of the supervisors blamed the entire stores low grade on me
If I had known working for Vons would have been this stressful, I would have looked for work somewhere else, but since I am now in Las Vegas and with this horrible economy I am stuck, since every other place I called, NOBODY else will hire me
A lot of the hourly employees are very nice and pleasant people though. And Deb, Gerry and Doug (3 managers) are all good wonderful people to work for. Its the other ones (who I will not name) that you should watch out for if you end up working here
