I live in Yonkers, NY. I am on maternity leave. I receive disability checks from GE financial.Because it is hard for me to go to manhattan where my bank ( United nations Federal Credit Union) is located, I usually mail my checks after I sign the back, write my account number and mention " deposit only".I also always send my checks via certified mail. Have been doing this for years never had any problems. My checks where always deposited into my account.
On March 22 I mailed certified, a check for $313.99 To UNFCU. one week letter I still had not received the return portion of the receipt and nothing was deposited into my account.I Called the post office after 10 days they stated the mail was considered lost. When I called GE financial for them to reissue me a new check and cancel the old one,GE stated that my check had been cashed already. I was in shock. they sent me a copy of the cashed check. Turns out my check was cashed at a Wachovia Bank in Orlando Florida. I do not have an account with Wachovia.
Because the check never got to my bank, UNFCU, they don't want to deal with this. I called Wachovia Bank in Florida, they state my bank has to contact them. They say they cannot deal with me because I do not have an account with them.
How can a check on my name( an my name is not common) that was already signed in the back with my UNFCU account number written and mention " deposit only" be cashed by a different person in an different bank? this is flat out fraud. Also how did my check end up in orlando Florida? someone at the post office is stealing the mail. I am so upset. I need my check because I am not working right now, I don't know what to do or where to file what. help!

I used to manage mail for a federal government contractor and we regularly saw misdirected mail. This was in California and we'd get mail intended for the other side of the state, Colorado and Georgia. Judging from the envelopes, the mail was intended for banks, Netflix, insurance companies and so on. All we could do is return the mail when the courier arrived the next day and let them be resent. However, the delivery time is effectively reset and it could take a few more days for the letters to reach their destinations.

If you got a copy of the check, hopefully you got a copy of the back of the check so that way you can figure out what account it went into @ Wachovia. Wachovia does have very good Customer Service. I know your disabled and have a hard time getting to your credit union, but I would suggest if you still doing this get Direct Deposit or open an account online with a bank that is close to you, if your able to leave your home or get out. This Credit Union may be the best bank in the world, but it sounds like it's a hassle if anything like this was to happen again. I'm sure you have the issued resolved by now. Your mail could have been processed through the machines inproperly. I have seen this before. I have seen letters from NC going to NC end up here in NJ. It happens. Since everything is done by machines now it doesnt get caught until we (carriers) find it.
As for your check being cashed that is definately fishy unless what the person did was get a fake id with your info on it since its already there and cash it. I personally would never send stuff like that through the mail and I work for the USPS. Tells you how much I trust them right. Try going to the postal inspectors and finding out who signed for the letter since it was certified mail piece. Then once you get that info you can narrow it down from there. It could be someone working at the bank that did it. You never know but you cant just outright blame the PO for it when you have no proof.
You should be checking Wachovia for cashing the check and also not to be heartless but yourself for sending vital info like that through the mail. If you cant get it to the bank have a family member do it for you. But never never send through the mail..
