My 73 year old father has Walmart-Netscape internet service. 3 weeks ago he was diagnosed with terminal cancer. He is alive but has many symptoms that make it difficult for him to talk on the phone (including hard of hearing, breathing problems and confusion).
He asked me to call and cancel his internet account as he had someone throw away his computer as he is physically unable to use it anymore.
I called with all the information (name, account number, email address, mode of payment, etc.) Was told that they had to talk to him to cancel.
I explained situation and was told that I needed to wait until he was dead and could prove it or get a power of attorney and fax it to them before I would be allowed to cancel his internet subscription.
I tried to reason with them and told them I was trying to do the right thing. I could just as easily had a male member of my family call and pretend to be my father.
This is absolutely ridiculous. I have heard people say that it is impossible to cancel--guess not even dying is a good enough excuse.

Remember - Wal-Mart is not only looking for value from vendors, but also from employees, meaning they don't hire the sharpest tools in the shed. Next time, simply do like we do in the ghetto... get a male relative to pretend their dad.
That will save you a lot of heartache, and time spent typing up ripoff reports!!

This is an unfortunate situation however it is not a RipOff. Beleive it or not this is for your dad's protection. There is so much fraud and identity theft that they need to verify that they are talking to the account holder.
This is not a pleasent thing to think about, but you(or someone in your family) needs to get a "Power of Attorney" to act on your father's behalf. While this may be the first place you had this issue, without a Power of Attorney it won't be the last.
