I received a cashier's check for $3,920.00

my instructions were: After cashing the payment you will deduct $300, which includes both $150 for shopping and your $150 commission after which you will be left with $3620 for the MoneyGram evaluation, you are now expected to evaluate the Wal-Mart store with $3,620. MoneyGram will charge you about $120 for the transfer. We expect you to bargain with the operator concerning the charges to see if it can be reduced or not . After all deductions you are expected to transfer about $3,480. The funds should be sent to New York, the name of our Receiving agent in Brooklyn is below.

Name    :  MICHAEL SMITH
Address :  1670 Fulton Street
City    :  Brooklyn
State   :  New York
Zipcode :  11213

We expect you to get it done immediately, so we can file our report to meet our deadline. I will be looking forward to your report.

I'm glad I looked up this information before cashing it. I went on the web site where the check was from and looked up their instructions for cashier's checks. It said If a check is sent from a different state than where the check is from it is most likely a fake. Check's can only be purchased at the bank in the state where they are from. The Check was from West Jordan, Utah  but it was sent from New York.

Wal-Mart isn't ripping anybody off here (at least not in this instance). The OP responded to some type of solicitation regarding mystery shoppers and this lead to receiving that fake cashier's check and instructions.

It does little good to recognize names because the scammers operate under many different aliases and many different fake scenarios such as modeling/acting opportunities, dating, etc...

It's more important to familiarize yourself with how the scam works. In short, never send money to people that you don't know via Western Union or Moneygram. Anybody can pick up the money and disappear. You are then left with a fake check that the bank will reverse and you'll be out thousands of dollars.

Research the "nigerian scam" or "419 scam" for more information.
