I found a really nice condo listed on Hotpads.com that was located downtown.  The rent seemed cheap but when I contacted the "owner" through HotPads he stated that he had never rented out the property before but his job required him to move overseas. He stated that the apartment was owned outright, there was no mortgage so that is why the rent was so low in my mind.  He stated that he worked for MWH Global Engineering and was stationed in the UK with his wife and two kids and that we would utilize Rent Reporters to transfer funds for rent payments and deposit.  Just like with other reported emails he ends the email with "I'm sure we can find a way for both of us to be satisfied."

Here are some of the red flags:

  • The apartment comes fully furnished but he will pay to have his stuff moved into storage
  • The rent was very low for the condo being nearly $400,000.  The rent was also all-inclusive so it was $1100/month and covered heat, water, gas, electric, water and sewer plus one year of cable subscription  which he said had been paid in full.  Why would someone pay for cable for a year when they don't live there?
  • "Warren" wanted to go through Rent Reporters but when I researched them I found scams on Ripoff Report and could not find a single phone number to call someone on their site.  How am I supposed to wire the $950 deposit that Warren wanted if I haven't met with or spoken to anyone live?

If it seems too good to be true it likely is--you can't blindly trust that people are good and well intentioned when it comes to money.  I am so glad that I researched this property on Zillow.com to find that all of the pictures listed on HotPads are the same ones from a house listed for sale on Zillow.  The alleged address of this apartment is 103 N Water Street, Milwaukee, WI 53204.

The email exchange between myself and "Warren Sayers" are verbatim to the reports on Ripoff Report when you search Rent Reporters. There are several accounts of people who wired money to Rent Reporters and then never got it back.  Please research before sending money.  Warren does not exist and there are no tax records for him associated with this property.  I am disgusted that people could be so manipulative and heartless.  Hopefully this report helps someone.
