First off I am an engineer of 40 years. I know materials and how things work. Second I have been flipping houses and doing construction as a hobby since before it became ANY T.V. show.

Have a 3 year old Wayne Dalton garage door with torquemaster springs. OMFG what a crap design. Spring broke yesterday, no one will touch it for ess than $250???

Traditional setups have springs that run around 30-45 dollars.

They market this junk as an improved safety style. The spring is inside a tube, so if it breaks it can't launch itself like many pre 1990 styles were sensationally reported to have done.

The hidden lie is this.

Key componets of this design are plastic! Hundres of pounds of torque and doors weighing in at 200lbs plus and it all hangs on outgassing plastics. The plastics fail after a few years depending upon your local environment. And the steel in the srpings is low carbon junk. Mine snapped after 3 years on a shop door that was proably only ever opened 60 times in 3 years.

Is it safer? Maybe if your customer is a moron who is sue happy and doesn't know a drill from a screwdriver.

Its just another over priced inferior product passed on to us consumers by MBA's trying to wring another 2 cents per piece from and overseas assembly line where they pay the workers 50 cents a day.

I have owned dozens of garage doors in my 40 years of doing this. Twice springs have broken before this. Both were in climates of extreme temperature variations, were on heavy insulated doors, and were both over ten years old.

This Wayne Dalton junk was on a 200lb door uninsulated in a  moderate climate and only 3 years old.  not to mention the fix costs 5x as much!

If you have a choice please save yourself the headache and don't choose any door with torquemaster springs.
