I met Wayne Kao while my sister and I were stranded in California with no way to get back home in Colorado. I was 18, she was 23. Wayne offered to let us stay at his place for the night and he would pay to fly us back in the morning. I had lost my ID, so only my sister returned to Colorado the next day.
Even when my sister sent me my ID information, however, Wayne refused to let me leave the house. I was not allowed to use the telephone or internet, and only my sister was allowed to call in to me. During the three weeks, my freedoms were slowly taken away, and eventually I wasn't allowed to sleep on a bed, shower, eat, etc. The house was gated, and I was constantly told that the next day would be the day he would let me leave, so I was wary to escape to the police.
Finally, with the help of an assistant, I was able to escape in a vehicle taken from the house, and eventually made it back home. I got out safely, but I am afraid that others aren't so lucky.

I did not tell my sister to call the police because, like most naive 18 year-olds, I thought I could handle it, and I didn't realize how dangerous of a situation it was. Again, he told me every day that the next day he would give me the money to go home, but the next day would come and we would make an excuse as to why I wasn't allowed to leave.
Like I said, thanks to an assistant, I got out safely. I am making this report purely so others don't have to be in that position, where it may not end the same way my story does.

I did not file a police report, as I greatly blamed myself for the whole incident. Also, I had a happy ending--I met my boyfriend who helped me through therapy for (prior) abuse and sexual assault. Now, as a happy and healthy adult, I just want to make sure it doesn't happen to another girl.
