This is supposedly a safe browser add-on that will help protect against dangerous or fraudulent websites. Users are supposed to rate sites good or bad. But WOT actively rewards users who specialize in giving negative reports. Some of their top-rated users have done tens of thousands of negative reports, and it is obvious they are not really rating sites accurately. WOT's own statistics show that the overwhelming majority of ratings are negative. The developers of WOT are in the business of selling security seals for websites, so they have a vested interest in making website owners afraid of negative ratings. It is typical for harmless websites to have negative ratings, which cause scary warning messages to pop up in the browser of anyone who has installed with WOT plugin. If the website owners aren't using WOT, they may never even know they have been targeted. At the same time, there are a number of dangerous or fraudulent sites which have no ratings or good ratings from WOT. Overall, the ratings are worthless to consumers and possibly very harmful to people running reputable online businesses. Then, when you realize that this plug-in is worse than useless and uninstall it, it is never really completely uninstalled, but leaves hidden traces behind, in the same way that spyware does. Stay away from this terrible product.

Google WOT will cost GOOGLE BILLIONS IN ADVERTISING
AUTHOR: Steve - ()

Google WOT is so corrupt and so targets Google advertisers, that no one who understands how Google WOT works would ever dare buy Google product ads or website sponsorship. The end result? Google's WOT team will try to destroy your business - and Google will do exactly that.
We have been in business over 3o years and millions of sales. We have paid Google millions in advertising.
Two people in Germany and France - not customers and we do not sell our ship out of the USA - posted that we steal credit card information and that we are literally poisoning people. Exploring those two, they have posted that same accusations against thousands and thousands of Google advertising businesses.
WOT does not allow us to post any defense on the same page as this appears. We are not even allowed to deny it or explain it is impossible as we do not get credit card information for online sales and "poison" has nothing to do with our business. In fact, we are a government inspected facility.
What Google WOT did with those two totally spam troll fake reports? They put a "scam" warning on every Google ad we have. Our sales fell thru the floor. For the first time in our history we had to lay off people.
The ONLY place possible to even deny it is on the WOT forum - but that just invites more trolls and - stunningly - a moderater for Google WOT deleted our defense - though posting on WOT's forum does not in any manner allow potential customers to see our defense anything.
Those two foreign trolls - reviewing their histories - have posted literally tens of thousands of attacks against businesses accusing them of every possible crime - using a "mass posting" feature of WOT - so they can post 100 businesses at at time are liars, thieves and murderers, rapists... and fun troll attacks. WOT has given them awards for doing so. Google WOT literally rewards and gives tools to spammers to attack Google advertisers with. That is how anti-business and arrogant Google has become. Thus, Google is on the path of the previous and now ex-Internet giants.
While I'm confident Google does not care about families being put on the street, Google should study the history of Ebay versus Amazon.
The people who work at Google, like the people who work at Ebay, are not merchants. They are only consumers. So they, therefore, assume all consumers and everybody like them who is not a merchant is good - and only businesses lie, cheat and steal. Over and over Ebay took extreme stances against their sellers on behalf of buyers. Ebay staff has no clue what business is about. So instead they each could create ways to retaliate against all businesses for some injustice they think some business maybe did to them.
Amazon, because of Amazon Prime, has to deal with the public as a seller. Thus, Amazon is aware their are people who just rant and rage, making wild accusations, lie, try to steal, try to get products for free and, thus are on both sides. While Amazon allows ONLY customers to file reviews - including negative reviews - Amazon does not do what Google WOT does - putting a big RED MARK by their advertisers with the huge word "SCAM!" because of a negative review. Again, Amazon does not even allow anyone but a customer to do a review.
Far worse that Ebay - who also only allows customers to file reviews - Google WOT is on steroids in it's campaign destroy businesses - which in practice is specifically their trolls and spammers targeting Google's advertisers.
Google literally gives out a tool where by ANYONE anywhere in the world can post 100 criminal accusations at a time against anyone - individual, business or merchant - and Google advertisers their #1 targets - as fast as they can keyboard. Literally tens of thousands - 100% about people and businesses they had no interaction with of any kind nor any basis whatsoever for the accusation that are made up entirely out of thin air.
For example, one of the two posted thousands of accusations that businesses in the UK were stealing from people on Craig's list - when NONE of those thousands even use Craig's list. Google WOT then declared those thousands of businesse are all "scams."
Google WOT has NOTHING to do with legitimate reviews of merchants. Zero. It is just the world of trolls and spammers, and a way for businesses competing with Google's advertisers to attack Google's advertisers via Google WOT.
Effect on Google?
No sane business person would pay Google to have Google use the money to declare they are a scam, thieves, liars and murderers - which is exactly how Google now uses our advertising money. Google uses our money to attack our business with outrageous accusations of criminality spammed out by the thousands by trolls Google awards for doing so.
EVERY COMPETITOR IN OUR PRODUCT LINE HAS CANCELLED THEIR GOOGLE ADS. We will be the last to do so. They plowed all their money into Amazon advertising. We will be doing the same. Because of Google WOT, Google has lost 100% of their advertisers - all to Amazon. While Google is not directly incompetition with Amazon like Ebay is, Amazon is in direct competition with Google for advertising money and merchants.
At one time, Google advertising was responsible for 80% of our sales. At one point, we were paying Google thousands of dollars a day. With Google using our ads to falsely advise all potential customers that we are a "scam," theives and even murderers, Google advertising not only loses money, our ads are used by Google WOT to attack our business instead of promoting it. Google advertising, because of two foreign trolls that make literally tens of thousands of attacks in bulk day and noght, now is responsible for less than 20% of our sales and is a monetary lose in relation to the cost of the ads.
100% of Google advertisers in our product line have 100% shifted their advertising to Amazon, for which because of Google WOT the income to Google is $0 for the entire market. This is how Amazon overran Ebay, and Google's anti-business practice with WOT is many, many times worse.
There is NO legitimacy to Google WOT. It encourages and even gives awards and special tools to trolls and spammers. It does not allow anyone to even defend themselves. Via Google WOT you can accuse anyone - an individual, business or corporation - of being a liar, theive, murderer, rapists - and via WOT's spamming tool you can make that accusation against 100 websites at a time - a thousand a day - just for the fun of it. In return, Google will give you awards for doing so.
Over the last decades, I have watched the giants rise to totally dominate - then go into totally unethical and arrogant practices - and then no longer are the giant. AOL. Yahoo. Ebay. Paypal. Microsoft search. Google believes it can literally use advertisers own money to attack their advertisers with the most liablous and false statements possible. I believe Google is mistaken.
A major law firm should pursue a class action lawsuit against Google. Google can NOT claim the open forum defense, because it is NOT an open forum. People are NOT allowed to equally post a defense. Rather, that is stuck off on a tiny side link - only the libelous statements - ie libel per se as it is criminal accusations - is seen - and it is Google WOT itself that puts on the word "Scam" to the person, business or merchant. It is Google WOT itself who accuses the person or business of being a "scam," as it is Google WOT that picked the word. No other company has been so bold as to summarily accuse businesses of being a scam entirely out of thin air with literally not a hint of proof or justification.
One of the people being laid off is one of our IT people. He is very skilled. He stated he is going to network out to have an army of fellow geeks flood WOT via a mass of different IP addresses at Google WOT against their biggest advertisers with accusations of theft, credit card theft and all the other accusations by the hundreds of thousands. Google WOT urges people to file fake and false reports - and gives them the tools and rewards them for doing so.
Let me be clear, we will not participate is such, but it certainly is fair. Google WOT in outrageous accusations cost him his income. Unlike Google WOT, we are legitimate. But it is only fair if he used the exact same words to cost Google as much income as possible, given in total indifference and calousness to truth, law or ethics this Google has cost him his income.
I don't think that retaliation is necessary. As I stated, 100% of our competitors already terminated their Google advertising. No sane person would pay Google to convert their paid advertisements into attack ads against their own business as Google has done to ours.
To others who many consider advertising on Google? Google WOT has an army of trolls and spammers who specifically target Google advertisers with every possible false attack and accusation. With this, Google will permanently put a red tag on every webpage you have on Google declaring that Google WOT has determined you business is a "scam." This will appear on every webpage you have thereafter, whether or not you still advertise.
Simply put, advertising on Google puts a huge target on your wesbsite and it is only a matter of time before Google WOT and their army of trolls and spammers use this to try to destroy your business. It is FAR to dangerous now for anyone to advertise on Google as Google's WOT army of trolls will attack as they target Google advertisers at the top of their list.
BEWARE OF ADVERTISING ON GOOGLE. Advertising on Google puts a huge target on your business by Google WOT's trolls and spammers. In return, then Google will red dot tag EVERY webpage you have - whether or not advertised - now and forever - cataloged as a "scam" website. Any potential customer that clicks on the red dot at any webpage you have will be informed that Google WOT has verified that your business is a "scam." This is the punishment for advertising on Google in the long run - and Google will use your advertising money as long to do it with too.
Once that happens, there is nothing you can do to remove it no matter what the accusation is. If the accusation is courts ruled you stole from thousands of people, that you are in bankruptcy, that you are a racist, or any other accusation along with Google WOT certifying your business is a scam - there is nothing you can do about it. You can't even post a denial or defense.
Before advertising on Google, go check out the red dots if you have the WOT app on Google Chrome, like 140,000,000 people do. If not, get the app before advertising. Then you will understand what I mean. Every day there are more "scam" red dot alerts against Google advertisers then before. Once that is on your company, meaning every web page advertised or not, there is NOTHING you can do about it.
Since Google WOT does NOT allow posting a denial or defense on the attacking page, Google is NOT an open venue and it is Google itself making the "scam" accusation. This is ripe for a mega billion dollar lawsuit. It only needs a law firm big enough to take it.
As a comment, such lawsuit could also stress Google does not follow its own declared guidelines. Their guidelines state they do not allow insulting attacks. Accusing someone of being a thief and scamster with zero evidence or even basis for the claim- and refusing to remove it as is done - also would be a relevant lawsuit fact.

Users who give negative ratings are not treated any differently from others.
> Some of their top-rated users have done tens of thousands of negative reports, and it is obvious they are not really rating sites accurately
Many of the most active users are focused on investigating Internet scams, which explains why they primarily leave negative comments.
> WOT's own statistics show that the overwhelming majority of ratings are negative.
You are looking at the comment statistics. Comments aren't ratings and 90% of all websites have a good reputation. You can learn about the difference here:

> The developers of WOT are in the business of selling security seals for websites, so they have a vested interest in making website owners afraid of negative ratings.
WOT sells trust seals to websites that have earned a good reputation and thus has no vested interest in rating sites poorly:

> At the same time, there are a number of dangerous or fraudulent sites which have no ratings or good ratings from WOT.

The add-on is not spyware. It's currently recommended by Mozilla, Google, and Opera and the source code is available for anyone to examine:

Here's a different point of view from someone who isn't anonymous:
"Browsing the Web with the Web of Trust extension gives a completely different sense of security," said Christen Krogh, Chief Development Officer, Opera. "Instead of browsing alone, you have millions of people helping point out what sites are trustworthy, are safe for your children, and respect your privacy. No matter how you use the Web, Web of Trust is an essential tool to browse safely in today's sometimes uncertain environment."
