In 2010, I went into Wells Fargo Bank to cash a $1000 personal check from my brother drafted on a Wells Fargo account. I was told that I would have to open an account to cash the check and was met by an account representitive. I agreed to open an account and deposited the check rather than cashing it. They gave me a debit card and and told me my account would automatically deposit $100/mo into a savings account.

While my account was down to $120 I made two small (less than $10) purchases for motorcyle fuel while travelling. Some time later, I recieved in the mail overdraft notices that totaled over $200 for making these fuel purchases. Consequently, Wells Fargo had wiped out my savings account of $200 and continued running up charges against me.

Now in July of 2014, I get calls from collection claiming that I owe Wells Fargo Bank $97 when in reality Wells Fargo Bank owes me over $200. This is a total scam. All I did was go into a Wells Fargo Bank to cash a personal check drafted on a Wells Fargo account and was denied and conned into opening a Wells Fargo Account of my own that was corrupt from the beginning and designed to scam me by running up false charges for an overdrat that Wells Fargo Bank caused.

Confusion is natural for some.

AUTHOR: Gregg Kolpin - ()

POSTED: Saturday, July 26, 2014

I had two other bank accounts that I used. Bank of the West in Salt Lake City and PSCU in Pennsylvania. Niether of these institutions have branches in Billings MT. My brother sent me a check from California to fund a project I was working on for him.

This account was operating for two months. At the time of the last transactions (fuel purchases for $8 and $9) there was $124 in the checking account and $100 in the associated savings account. An automatic savings account withdrawal of $100 scheduled for after the fuel purchases somehow left the account NSF for the fuel purchases.

By the time I was notified of the "error" Wells Fargo compounded over $200 in overdraft charges ($35 per item per day). When Wells Fargo was contacted and confronted with this error they could not explain dicreptency and insisted that I make a deposit to cover the overdraft charges. This account was immediately closed and savings account assets were siezed by Wells Fargo.

I can see how confusion is natural for some when incorrect assumptions are made.

Very confused...

There are some things, especially after your update that are very confusing.

First of all you obviously did not have any other bank accounts, or when they told you that you had to open an account you would have just said to forget it and deposit in your account.  One also has to wonder when you told your brother what happened why he didn't help you out or at least explain to you that you didn't need to open an account and order them to close it right then and there...four years ago.

Then we get to your update.

Every cent was tracked in an exel spreadsheet. The card I used for minor gas purchases was a debit card. If there was no money in the account the transaction should not have been processed.

- If you track every cent, how would you ever get to the point of there being no money in your account?   So either you intentionally tried to spend more than you knew you had available, or you in reality do not keep track of your account.

Bottom line, I was interested in cashing a check not opening an account.

- You opened this account in 2010.  So even if they somehow conned you into opening an account back in 2010, four years later that is actually no longer meaningful.  The reason is that over this four year period you could have closed your account out at any time.   You could have gone to any ATM and withdrawn all of your money, instead it appears you used it on a regular basis.

This is a con and a shceme by Wells Fargo Bank.

When you opened this account did you keep a check register of your purchases and deposits?? I suspect you did not so therefore you do owe them money and NO I do not work for them.  Learn to take responsibility for your actions!
