I recently went into the red. I was notified by email that my account balance was only $15. I received an overdraft fee of $35, which was actually my own fault for not paying close enough attention. On the 19th my paycheck was automatically deposited, as well as my husbands. I balanced my checkbook (this was a Friday). Saturday, I went to work, no phone alerts. I went online to balance my checkbook again from purchases made, and there was another overdraft charge put in for the 19th that wasn't there. Not only that, but 2 more withdrawls were added and it seems they just pushed back my deposits to make it seem like they were made later in the day. How shady is that. I have had this happen before and when you call for help they act like I have no idea how to balance my checkbook and "sorry, there is nothing we can do once those charges are put onto your account."

Last Christmas, my husband went shopping with the debit card (which is a wonderful way for them to steal money from you legally). He was unaware that it was large bill week so we only had about $100 in our account at the time, and he spent well over that. They let every one of his transactions go through, with a $35 fee for each as an insufficent funds fee as well as a $35 overlimit fee. We ended up having to return a large number of christmas gifts, I was so sick I returned everything that anyone got me just to cover the $460 in fees!!! When I called and asked why my card was never declined they said they will let it go for a day waiting to see if a deposit is made. What the heck does that mean. Once again I got "sorry, but there's nothing I can do once the charges are added to your account".

I hate them, and I tell everyone I know not to use them, because I believe that they were founded by Billy the Kid!!

URGENT ALERT: SOMETHING ELSE EVERYONE SHOULD KNOW IS THAT SOME BANKS CAN....

AUTHOR: Karl - (U.S.A.)

HOLD A DEPOSIT THAT IS MADE ON YOUR CREDIT CARD OR DEBIT CARD FOR UP TO A MONTH!

I just got back from a Home Depot where I was going to rent something for the day from their Rental department. At the counter of their Rental department, taped onto the cash register, there's is a sign that states-

'Your BANK may hold a deposit made on your credit card or debit card for up to 30 days.'

If this is true, then MILLIONS of consumers all over the USA might not be aware of this policy by some banks, wouldn't you agree?

REMEMBER, when you rent a car the same thing might occur, right?

CHECK WITH YOUR BANK & see what their policies are regarding DEPOSITS made on your CREDIT CARDS & DEBIT CARDS.

Thank you.

What You Need To Know

AUTHOR: Skeletor - (U.S.A.)

Don't worry-I'm not going to bash you like other posters most likely will-I've been there enough times to know how the system works.
First of all, you admitted you were at fault for the first overdraft. You probably don't realize that some items will show up as pending, so you think they are taken out of your balance. They are-temporarily. If those items-always charges you made with your debit card-don't post that night, the next day or the day after, they will fall off, and the money will reappear back in your balance. You then think you have this money available, so you spend it. Then those items come back in, causing you to go into the red. The bank posts largest to smallest, so if your larger item posts first and overdraws your account, the smaller item will be a second overdraft-hence, two charges.
There are two things you can do to minimize the damage or avoid it altogether-keep a check register and religiously balance your checkbook. I mean, every day, go into your online account, see what has posted and mark it off. If it's not marked off, it's still out there waiting to clear your account. Second, take a cash withdrawal and buy all your food, gas, etc. with cash. Yes, you may overdraw your account, but it will be one overdraft, not two or three or $460 worth.
I agree with you that the charges are punitive, but they are what they are, and they are legal. The best way to get back at the bank is not to let them have your money.
