I'm a relatively environmentally conscious person who wants to save some money too.

So I enrolled in online statements for the checking accounts I have with Wells Fargo, which reduced my monthly service fee by about $8 per month.

I didn't realize until I reviewed my first electronic statement that Wells Fargo conveniently leaves off the most important information on a checking account - the check images themselves!

The paper statement includes images of all checks written, but the online version leaves them off.

Wells Fargo explains that the images are available for download off their website, but if you write hundreds of checks a month, this could take hours to download each individual image.

** DO NOT SIGN UP FOR ONLINE STATEMENTS **

It appears to me that Wells Fargo purposely withholds information that you might want or need in the future to make it difficult for you to leave Wells Fargo in the future.  If you close your checking account and need an image of some checks for an audit...you might be surprised at the cost for that service!

My call to their level 2 customer service team only gave me more scripted blather about how "customers don't want all that information on their online statements."

Shame on Wells Fargo for purposely withholding MY OWN information!  Shame on them for not automatically including this information on the online statements - a service that they try to force on you nearly every time you log in.

This is one of those small annoyances that make people absolutely hate banks like Wells Fargo.

i never wanted to be a banker!

The bank has made the customer responsible for their duties. The bank is following the mantra of the irresponsible. LETS MAKE SOMEONE ELSE RESPONSIBLE SO WE CAN BENEFIT FROM THEIR ERRORS. Banks who do not fully disclose account information by shifting the responsibility to the customer are only working for themselves, why do business with them and pay for them to benefit??????

another example of shifting the responsibility to the victim

another shift of responsibility to victim. WF seems to plan on blaming customers for not doing what the bank has historically done as a service to their customers , CUSTOMER SERVICE seems to be lacking for this banks. When the bank blames the customer for inadequacies in the system created to apparently punish customers for not doing the work of the bank. Sounds abusive to me!!!!!

Not a RipOff

They gave you the option to get On-Line Statements and save $8 a month.

They are not withholding or leaving off the Check Images...you just need to go through an extra step to download them.  To you checks are the most important item, to other people they aren't.  I don't know how many checks you write, but a majority of the people may write 1 or 2 checks a month so having to download them on their own is no big deal.

Obviously this service doesn't work for you, but that does NOT make it a RipOff.  If you don't like this new service, go back to getting regular statements and pay the extra $8.  It really isn't rocket science.
