White Glove Moving & Storage gave low quote ($825.00) vs. what the actually bill was ($3,640.00). Rip-off! Jersey City New Jersey

This is a complaint against White Glove Moving & Storage. 930 Newark Ave 5th Floor Jersey City, NJ 07306 (201) 222-8300

On Feb. 29, 2004 I had spoke with a representative of White Glove about using their company. I needed a company that would pack and move for me. I was in a car wreck and was unable to do it myself. After searching several websites on moving companies, theirs was the lowest quote.

I spoke with Allen Vega and told him what needed to be packed and how much I had. I did a walk thru of my 400 sq ft. studio apartment and named off each item and gave him a guessing amount on dishes, clothes, books and other misc. items. He said I would be under the 1500 lbs, he even said by a couple hundred pounds. I had some plastic tubs that I had used when I moved to VA so I packed as much as I could in those.

I did sign a contract with Allen/White Glove and my fault, didn't read the fine print. Allen told me I was to pay $200.00 by phone and then an additional $200.00 when the movers arrive at my apartment. The remaining balance of $425.00 was to be paid when they drop off my belongings to the new residence in KY. Allen Vega told me the only additional expense would be for the boxes. Well here comes the surprise!

When the mover (Eli) arrived at my apartment on 2/19/2004 he didn't even know that there was packing involved with this job, He was upset and told me I would be better off using U-Haul and doing the job myself. I told him I couldn't that I had a flight out the next day. He said that this job was going to be a lot more than the $825.00 I was quoted.

I called the office to talk to someone about the additional expenses the mover was telling me about. The manager told me he wanted this to be a pleasant moving experience and that they would not charge me the packing charge. The packing charge is when they pack a box that cost you $15.00, you pay an additional $15.00 for the mover to pack it. This one box of items is now costing you $30.00.

I had my hands tied at this point. I had a flight going out the next day and couldn't do this move alone. So I proceeded with the move. During this time, Eli talked to his boss Isaac Cohen and came back and told me Isaac laughed at the idea of me getting a discount. With all said, I still had to go on. Elis help wasn't on time, so I helped him pack my clothes. He taped the boxes and I packed them, thinking this would save time.

The help finally arrives an hour late. This help of his is a man in his 60's. Eli decides that he will pack everything and have his help load the truck. As I waited and watched, Eli makes jokes at the expense this move is going to cost me. Kept saying cha-ching when he used tape. 33 rolls total was used on my move. I also asked why he was using USED boxes. The price they are charging me per box is for NEW ones. With Eli and his help they were there until 12:00am. I question how long it took. There was periods they both went to the truck and didn't come back up to the apartment for 40 minutes. Regardless the job was finally packed.

Allen Vega told me that I would get an email or phone call to let me know when it should arrive. On Monday Feb. 23,2003 I called the office to find out when I was to receive my belongings. This is the schedule of calls it took to actually get an answer

9:00am -Talked with Alan Vega, he told me to call 1-888 609-6333. Which I spoke with Isaac Cohen. Isaac Cohen said he would call me back at 9:30am. 11:30am Called Isaac- he told me to call 1-800-256-0139 and talk to Nick. Called and Rick said he would give Nick the message I called.

11:45am- I called again and was told my call would be returned.

1:15pm- I called again and once again I was told I would get a call back in 10 minutes.

2:15pm- I called and talked to Nick, which Nick tells me that Isaac Cohen will be calling me back in a few minutes.

2:31pm- I called and left a message with the owner Danny Akrish at 201-222-8300 ext. 333

3:15pm- I called and got put on hold. No one ever came back to the phone so I hung up.

3:19pm-Isaac FINALLY called me and gave me the quote of 3,640.00 .I was so stunned I hung up on him.

On the next day, Feb 24,2003 I called to speak to someone to let them know what I went through. I figured I didn't do my homework on the company and got scammed now I just want my belongings. The first person I got in contact with was Karen. She put me through to Stephanie. I was told that was the general manager. I am assuming it is the owner's wife. While on the phone with her, I was trying to let her know of what happened and she kept interrupting me. I asked her several times to let me talk and she got louder and said they have done nothing wrong. I never said they did, I was just trying to tell her what I went through.

Seeing as I was getting nowhere with this company, I wanted to find out when my belongings would get to KY. She said she would call me back. A few hours later I do get a call from her. She stated that I would get a 20% discount on the service for packing, which I was originally told that it wasn't going be charged at all.

When I asked Stephanie to fax me the final bill, she sends over all the forms I already have with a bill that does not show the 20% discount. I send a fax back requesting a bill with the new total. She has Karen call and tell me on the phone what it would be. So I in turn send another fax with the new total and ask her to sign n return to me. A few hours later, I finally get the fax. I still never got a phone call when the movers were to arrive.

On Tues. March 4, 2004 the movers arrive to unload my belongings. On his bill it still shows the full amount without the 20% discount. I showed him my copy of the fax, he called the office and verified. While I'm checking off items there are two boxes without stickers that I questioned. I haven't been able to go through my packages so if there is breakage I do not know of it as of yet. The boxes are banged up and some torn. On the items that were covered with the $6.00 rental blankets there was some chips in the wood. Then to top off the great moving experience, the movers threw their trash in the front yard of where my belongings came too.

The problem I have with this company is that I feel its false advertising. I checked with a local mover in KY and told him what I had told Allen Vega in the beginning as what I have that needs to be moved and he said he would have quoted me at least 3,000 lbs, unlike the less than 1500 lbs Allen gave me. This is a lesson learned.
