Actually... I don't understand how you can get away with your students obtaining their Black Belts without background check because according to Florida State Statutes AND all the major Taekwondo Associations Regulations (WTF, ITA, ITF, ATA, USTA, etc.) you must report each and every potential Black Belt to the local police station as obtaining a Black Belt and in order for the local police station to accept such a report and allow a Black Belt to be earned they must be free of sexual offenses and felony offenses of ANY other circumstance. So obviously, this school is breaking the law... I once knew someone (YEARS AGO) he attended White Lion Taekwondo and he still, to this day, has a copy of the police report (filing with police station) signed by Mr. Mattielo and the police official... for some reason, this was obviously ceased and illegal up to 5 years for each offense for the school owner.

Background Checks
AUTHOR: Michael - (U.S.A.)
SUBMITTED: Wednesday, March 28, 2012
While doing background checks on your employees are important, they are not mandatory. Yes we live in an age where there are sickos everywhere, but let's not be paranoid about every aspect of our lives.
I am a Martial Arts School owner in New Jersey, I hold multiple Black Belts, and I've never had to report my self to the police department. My black belts are all certified through the World Tae Kwon Do Federation, the same federation that governs the TKD olympic games. and they don't require a criminal background check. You have to remember that beginning a Martial Arts journey is about discovering yourself. Learning respect, humility, perserverence, etc... Just because you sign your children up, doesn't mean that they are the only ones on this journey. The Parents need to follow the path and set the example at home as well. Sometimes you just need to trust that the Instructors know what they're doing. Hope this helps!

are YOU serious?

First, if your child is only nine... that means that in less than 4 years they received a black belt. Thats ridiculous. Of course the police station shouldn't have to add children to their data base.

Background checks for Black Belts????
AUTHOR: Andy - (U.S.A.)

Are you serious?
My 9 and 12 year old sons earned blackbelts, as well as many children around the same age. You think each one would need a background check and report to police?
Could you imagine the paperwork involved, as well as the size of the database? It would exceed the Federal No Fly List.
Besides what would be the point? To document a dangerous person earning a blackbelt?
Who would decide if a person is too dangerous? Based on what would they make such a determination? How would they utilize such a list?
This doesn't sound right to me at all.

First, I would like to apologize for the misinformation provided in the above complaint.
Second, my son Brandon has been going to White Lion TaeKwanDo for nine years and I have seen Master Mattiello bend over backwards to accomodate many families in need. Those families that come in and actually talk face to face and try to work out a solution have always been resolved.
Third, a person can call any police station in the continental US and ask if Black Belts are supposed to be reported. We actully have police officers and detectives work out at the school. Therefore, unless names can be provided which can be verified please read with an open mind as to the needs of the individual who wrote the complaint.
Fourth, any parent or student that has any concerns can either call or contact Mr. Chuck or Master Mattiello. Again, we apologize for any misinformation that has been provided.
