I was having a normal day at work until lunchtime!  For lunch, I went to a local grocery store, made a salad at the salad bar and proceeded to pay for it with my VISA Check Card.

"CREDIT DENIED"...WHAT???!!!  I had over $1,000 available in that checking account!!!  I was fortunate that I had the cash on-hand to pay for it.  Anyway, I returned to the office and proceeded to contact my credit union to find out what is going on.

The credit union informed me that my daily limit had been exceeded.  Upon further investigation, it turns out that someone had acquired my card number and had attempted to  use xoom.com to electronically withdraw $2,900+ of funds from my account.  However, I was fortunate that my credit union's security department had declined this attempted fraud due to suspicious activity.

I notified xoom.com concerning this attempted fraud and at first they seemed very concerned and initially stated that they had located the attempted transaction stating that a customer in Columbia (that's right...SOUTH AMERICA) set up an EFT using MY card number!  They stated that they would immediately e-mail an affidavit to file.

I am 101% gringo and do not personally know ANYONE from Columbia!  My family does enjoy regular dining visits to various Mexican restauraunts where I have used my VISA check card on a multiple basis.  Is it possible that upon using my credit card at a Mexican restaurant that a dishonest employee could have written down my card number and sent it back home to Columbia???!!!

Since my initial notification to xoom.com, the latest is that they cannot locate the transaction and need more information such as the first six digits of my VISA check card and the last four digits of my checking account number.  That was last week and they have  xoom.com has not gotten back to me, nor did they e-mail the affidavit.  It appears as if they are now attempting to protect their customer rather than assist their customer's victim!

Upon filing a police report, my cognizant sheriff's department of residence has informed me that because the attempted fraud was not successful, that no crime has been committed!  I suppose the law of the land is designed to protect criminals and not victims.  At this point, I feel helpless about getting to the bottom of this...
