I use the American Express serve card because my employer required that our paychecks be deposited into an account. On July 15, 2015 I used the American Express card to  purchase $10 worth of gas from my local and frequently used corner gas station. I always pay for gas inside but on this date the gas station attendant was very busy and asked me to pay at the pump. After completing the purchase I received my receipt for a $10 gas purchase and left. Later that day I tried to pay my cable bill using my American Express Serve card and was told there was insufficient funds on the card. Since my only purchase had been the $10 gas purchase I called Anerican Express to find out what was going on. I was told that a hold for $100 had been placed on my card by the service station for my $10 gas purchase. Today, July 16, 2015 I returned to the gas station to find out why this done and was told that they NEVER place any holds on credit cards used at the pumps. They apologized for the problem and offered to help me in any way necessary to get the money returned to my account. I called American Express again and this time asked to speak with a supervisor to determine who EXACTLY was holding my $100. It took me over 25 minutes on the phone with this person before she finally admitted that it was American Express that was holding the money, NOT THE GAS STATION!!! They LIED and WILL NOT return the funds for 8 days. I am retired and I work hard for my money I earn and loosing $100 for 8 days is not something I can afford.

I am closing this account and my suggestion to anyone thinking about using this company or their cards to think again. THEY ARE DISREPUTABLE AND IN MY OPINION SHOULD BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR THEIR ABUSE OF LAWS!!

$100 hold on funds for $10 gas purchase

Just wanted to add an update on my first filing! The $10 gas purchase cleared my account yesterday. By the way, the $10 and the $100 were BOTH deducted from my account immediately at the time the purchase was made. According to the AMEX site, the hold only should have been deducted until the transaction had cleared and then the balance of the $100 minus the actual purchase amount should have been returned to my account at that time. Also, according to their site and in their own words..."ON HOLD" means that "we" American Express place a hold on funds in your account for any purchases made at gas stations or restaurants in an amount that WE feel in sufficient to cover the purchase. After the transaction has cleared your account, WE (American Express) will refund the balance of those funds to your account, minus the amount of the purchase This will typically take no longer than 8 days from the date of your purchase.

American Express immediately took the $10 dollar purchase for gas from my account and also took the $100. When I spoke with them this morning to find out why the hold had not been released they said that the gas station had OK the hold (WHICH IS A BLATANT LIE......I SPOKE WITH THEM AND THEY ARE NOT HOLDING THIS MONEY NOR HAVE THEY "OK'D IT) I was also told that the money would be returned after the 8th day, unless the merchant makes a claim on it!!!!! What a crock of SH....T!!!

I am retired and work part time to be able to pay my bills! My paycheck is deposited into this account. (THAT WILL STOP IMMEDATELY!!) I can not afford to loose $100 for one day let alone 8 days!!!

PLEASE tell everyone you know to stay away from American Express Serve! They are many other more reputable cards to use. This one isn't even based in the USA which is why it's impossible to even talk with them on the phone and there is not other numbers listed to contact anyone or anywhere else!!!! THIS IS TRULY ONE OF THE BIGGEST RIPOFF"S GOING!!!
