Background:
I am about to get married. Since we will be joining accounts there will not be a need for me to have any extra checking accounts. I have been checking the one I want to cancel for some time and have noticed that Experian has been charging my accound $14.95 a month for some supposed credit monitoring. I was not shocked by the charge because a year or two back when I wanted to check my credit report the same thing happened. I was easily able to cancel that account. A few months ago, my fiance and I were thinking about buying a house so I naturally checked my credit report again. I knew that they would charge but I needed the service.

Issue:
When I went to cancel the new account, they first asked me what my SSN was. I asked if they could look up my account another way. I don't like to give my SSN to a person. He was able to and found the account. He then went through this huge process of asking me what my security question was. I was fully able to answer that. He then pulled my report. He came back on the phone and said "OK, mam, now to futher verify that you are who you say you are, I need you to tell me two things that are on your credit report." RED LIGHT!! I first responded by saying "I do not have to give you that information." He responded "In order for us to cancel your account you will need to give us that information." Fair enough, so I did.

I got through that brick wall without incident but then....he said "for further security please tell me the details of those two things." Ummmm, no! I again stated that I did not want to give that informaiton and he stated the same response as the first time. So I could get the d**n thing closed I attempted to tell him the details. He said "That is incorrect. I cannot cancel your account."

OK, first of all, I feel that it is a MAJOR invasion of my privacy and not really any of their business to ask me such questions. I honestly don't know every detail of my credit report and I don't know the exact amounts of my loans. They adamently refused to help me in any way and expected me to tell them exact amounts. I feel that what they have done is illegal and I plan to file a complaint Monday morning with the federal government.
