My fiancee also bought my rings at Kay Jewelers, we had them customized to put rubies in the wedding ring (his birthstone). They were purchased 7/2003, we were married 6/2004. I took the rings in for the 6 month inspection. The DAY we got married, while the ink was drying on the marriage license I might add, I looked down and one of the rubies was missing.

We were leaving for our honeymoon in a few days and I wanted to show my ring off so I did not take it in to be repaired. While we were on vacation, 2 more rubies fell out. When we returned and took the ring back in, it came back smaller (we were in Mexico on vacation - VERY HUMID) so they resized the ring.

A few weeks later, the last ruby fell out, once again they repaired the ring. The latest incident is one of the marquise diamonds (there are 2 on each side of the ring) fell out. They are now going to get it repaired, and then send it to a custom jeweler to see why the stones keep falling out. I wish to have it sent to a store of my choosing, they say they can't do that because it isn't an approved store of theirs.

Now before you question the care of my rings, I took them in for their check-up 2 WEEKS BEFORE THIS LAST INCIDENT. My hands aren't broken, the ring isn't bent. This particular ring has 2 prong set marquise diamonds and 4 channel set rubies. I have rings that I wear nearly everyday and used to race off-road and didn't have a problem with stones falling out.

I suggested that they repair my ring and give my husband his money back. That's when they decided to send it to a custom jeweler (of their chosing). My husband's assistant thinks this ring is possessed - I'm beginning to think the same thing.

Rubies and Sapphires

AUTHOR: Darren - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Saturday, August 27, 2005

As a Graduate Gemologist from GIA(Gemological Institute of America) i must respond to one point in the previous rebuttal.

Rubies and sapphires ARE from the same family and have the SAME durability. Rubies do NOT scratch or break any easier than sapphires. When shopping for jewelry bear in mind that you usually get what you pay for(unless you buy from Tiffany & Co.).

#2 UPDATE EX-employee responds

Just some helpful information

AUTHOR: Stella - (U.S.A.)

Sterling is the parent company of several brand names, one of which happens to be Kay. The other happens to be Jared. As it is, if you've dealt with a Kay store, ALL Kay merchandise goes to a Jared to be serviced. There are no jewelers on site at a Kay and don't waste your time with the MILLION DOLLAR DIAMOND EVENT, it's a waste of your time and money.

Go to your nearest Jared if you have one, and ask to speak with the shop manager (jeweler) if he's there, which usually he is, you can speak with him face to face, explaining your concerns. This may help.

Rubies are a part of the same family as Sapphires however they are not as durable. They tend to scratch more easily and break equally so. It may have happened that you ended up cracking your stones and they fell out. Under their policy, they do replace the rubies. However, keep in mind, lab created rubies are more durable and less expensive than natural ones, because they do not have inclusions or any other characteristics. You may try to go with a lab created ruby instead. If you have lab created rubies,(you can tell if they are not cloudy, a vibrant red, and sparkle very well) then, my suggestion is to have your prongs retipped, stones tightened, and have additional gold built up around your stones.

Hope this is useful.

oops - Everyone should know that chlorine is very rough on gold and maybe even platinum.

In my offroad racing experience, I have never knocked around the top of my ring, just the underside, so my stones were fine. However, in my experience with mundane filing, every day office work and just digging around my purse, I knock those stones and catch them on everything! It's no wonder they loosen up. But that's neither here nor there...

You mention your rubies are in a channel setting...when it comes to channel setting, if one stone is loose, they are ALL loose. That is why you lost the rest of them. Had you had it serviced right away, there is a chance you would have only lost the one. Thank goodness for their return and warranty policy, though, you got to wear it and take advantage of having it fixed. Why the channels were loose to begin with, who knows, there are several possibilities:

1. You may have knocked the ring on something and not realized it within the first few minutes of wearing it...this is more common than anyone would think.

2. The channels may not have been as tightly closed as they could be, as you can't be as rough with rubies as you can be with diamonds..the jeweler didn't want to crack your rubies

When they sized the ring is probably when your marquise became loose, but really, two prong? I have never had good luck with two prong settings. Unfortunately a better setting will probably ruin the look you want. Oh, and one more thing, if you wore your rings while swimming on your honeymoon, that could have caused some damage too. Everyone should know that chlorine is very rough on gold and maybe even platinum. Hope everythign works out
