My daughter and son-in-law flew America West Airlines to meet us in Las Vegas. While in Las Vegas, they lost their return flight tickets back home to Portland, OR. The night before they were to leave, we called America West Airlines to see what could be done. Even though both of their names were on the passenger list and both of them had the proper identification, they were not allowed to board the plane.
The woman on the phone was rude and insulting. We were told we would have to purchase more tickets to get them back to Portland and we could apply for a refund of the cost of the return trip tickets. We drove back home to California and got on the phone to find a return flight out of Ontario, California. We picked up the refund application while at Ontario Airport from America West Airlines.
We submitted the application and America West responded with a $200.00 charge to "research the lost tickets" which resulted in a zero refund amount for us, because our itinerary replacement tickets were not identical to our original tickets. Well, of course not!!!!. I contacted the Better Business Bureau and they did absolutely nothing to help out.

Paper Tickets are like CASH

It would seem that you were traveling on PAPER or HARD TICKETS and not E-TICKETS or ELECTRONIC TICKETS. Paper tickets are just like cash. They can be redemmed for money by almost anyone in the TRAVEL INDUSTRY. So if you lose them, the airline does have to go thru the CENTRAL CLEARING HOUSE to make sure that havent been refunded or anything else by someone else. This is why they charge a $200.00 fee. If you would travel on E-Tickets, everything is stored in the computer & all you have to do is present your ID for checkin. The only time PAPER TICKETS are better is when there is BAD WEATHER or some other event that causes flight disruptions. Then you can take your PAPER TICKET to some other airline & they will honor it on a SEAT AVAILABLE basis. So the bottom line is YOU LOST YOUR TICKETS & NOW YOU HAVE TO PAY FOR IT !!!!!

Anyone who knows anything about the airline industry knows that if you lose paper tickets, you are down a creek without a paddle. They cannot be replaced.
Shame on your daughter for losing her paper tickets. She should have taken better care of them. You cannot blame the airline for her lack of responsibility. So step up to the plate and realize your role in this fiasco.
In the future, if you are not responsible or you are worried about losing your tickets, simply request an E-ticket. That way you will not have to carry any tickets to the airport. The perfect solution!
