I received a letter from Bravo International Lotto which says it's head office is located in the Netherlands, but the letter was postmarked from Club Prive/VMC in Montreal, Canada.
It said that I was a winner in a "Bravo Sweepstakes Lottery/free Lotto Promotion Program" held in the Netherlands, and was to receive $85,000 and they enclosed a check endorsed in my name for $1997.00 to help cover the taxes. The check looks really good, with a legitimate bank printed on it, account number, routing number, all the bells and whistels. But, some thing about this check did not look right to me.
So I checked the internet, low and behold, there were reports of similar scams. How shocking.
Also, the check listed Steed Media Group in Atlanta, I am not sure if this exist or not. It listed Washington Mutual Bank in GA, but there is not a branch located at the address written on the check.
People will do anything these days. Sad, Sad, Sad!!!

I agree that Nneka did well here, as these scams usually seem to be aimed at people who are or should be desperate enough to suspend their caution and accept something that is too good to be true. I suspect these lottery clowns target their mailings into disadvantaged zip codes. The US Census data makes this easy, and probably the first to use zip codes was Fingerhut to target their working class customers.
But then Jay got his trolly off of the tracks with
"This scam is coming out of Canada and we are not very well liked by Canadians, not that I blame them!"
"For example: Some of the reasons why we are not well liked include the fact that when visiting Canada, our citizens are rude and inconsiderate. Our country is using up there natural resources, like Oil and Gas. And our Governments policies are very unpopular."
"So as you can see, even if you contacted Canadian Officials, the chances of them being sympathetic or helping would be remote and this explains why Canada is in the Top Three places for Telemarketing/Mail Marketing Scams. "
"In case your curious, Florida, California and Canada are the top three places...
Hmmm... a lot of Canadians go to Florida for the winter."

Nneka,
That was a good call on your part, if people took the time to do what you did, well then, we just wouldn't have great websites like the Ripoff Report!
If you had fallen for this scam, you would be "SOL!"
The BBB's, State Attorney Generals, FTC and so on, would not and could not help you.
