I purchase a policy online from Esurance.  The policy effecitve date was 7-10-10.  I had cancelled the prior policy with the other insurance company for the same date.  But then I received a letter from the other company (21st Century) wanting to charge me $63.00 for the three days from 7-06 to 7-10.  I called them and they got rid of the $63 charge for the three days and moved the cancellation date back to 7-6-10.

When Esurance found out the policy date ended on 7-6 instead of 7-10 they said I had to pay them an additional $39 for the "lapse" in coverage.  I asked them to change the policy start date to 7-06 and they said they wouldn't do that so I informed them I would be cancelling.

I found another company and started the policy 8-10-10.  I called Esurance to cancel and they said there would be a $50.00 cancellation fee.   I told them go ahead and screw me some more as I am planning to take these practices to the Insurance Commissioner in California.

TOTAL RIP OFF FROM ESURANCE  $89.00!!!!

When did you purchase the Esurance Policy?  My guess would be that you purchased it on 7/10.  That is unless you intentionally were going to go without insurance,  telling Esurance to make it effective on 7/10 even though you knew(and I think you did know) that your other policy expires on 7/6.  So if that is the case they are not going to make the effective date BEFORE you purchased it.

But since CA requires insurance, you are charged for "lapse" coverage.  I find it interesting how 21st Century was going to charge you $63, and Esurance was going to charge you only $39.  Yet you think Esurance is the one ripping you off.

I'd be interested in knowing what the Insurance commissioner says.  But don't be surprised if the Insurance Commissioner comes back and tells you that what you were being charged is valid.

I also hope that your new insurance was the same or cheaper otherwise it really does seem that the only one who ripped you off was you.
