I was charged overdraft fees unfairly due to misleading and untimely updates to online banking. I have a accumulated $200 in overdraft fees as a result of 2 transactions made on 12/29.  The overdraft for these 2 items were $66 but I continued to make purcahses as my account did not show an overdraft until 12/31.
The funds for 12/29 purchase were deposited to my account but because I made an internal transfer after 9 p.m. the funds did not post until 12/30. Also one of the payment I made on 12/29 was by ACH and it had not posted in the account on 12/29, this posted through the night on 12/30 as a 12/29 transaction.

In the meantime 5/3 bank continued to send me email notifications on my daily balance which did not show any overdrat fees. I had sufficient funds to cover my payments and purchase but when they charged me an overdraft fee on 12/31 it overdrew my account and this caused that all other purchases I made on 12/30 to be charged and overdraft fee.

I have all my email notifications with my daily balance and a list of all my purchases in the order that they were made.  I even walked into a branch on 12/30 and made a cash deposit in the morning before making any purchases but because of the order they post transactions; debits first and credit second, purchases made on 12/30 were also overdrawn.  When I contacted the bank the response was that this is a practice with all of the banks for a long time.  No it's not, if I make a cash deposit with a teller that should post right away, if not I would have not deposited the cash and used this for my purchases.  The bank refused to reverse these fees as I had OD fees reversed in the past not because of my mistake and they are aware of this, my Electric company made a mistake and charged my account twice for a payment I made. At the time I filed a complaint the electric co contacted 5/3 and the funds were returned to my account but this already caused overdraft fees which 5/3 reversed at the time.  The bank manager response was that this was the electric co fault and not 5/3 and that I should have collected the overdraft fees from the electric company.  Really...if  I knew that they were counting this as courtesy reversal to my account other than a mistake by the electric co, I would have gone after the electric co.

Online banking should never be used

AUTHOR: unknown - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Monday, January 04, 2010

Online banking should never be used as a way to checking out your checking account..It is never updated minute by minute. It is not a mind reader and neither is the ATM, which is the same..Never ever used the online banking ..I have said this a million times on here and other web sites due to it takes time for online to update and something could come thru and it not show ..Always use your register and don't figure the bank or online to figure your account for you. This way you know what is out there and of course give what is out there time to post even your deposits..If you make a deposit at the branch even tho it is cash, give online time to update and don't go on a spending spree thinking all is ok. as in your case you saw that it was not.  I have seen many of mistakes made by tellers so use your own judgement and your register only to figure out your account.

And as for you utility bill, that I do agree with you, call them instead of your bank and if it was their error than they should of given you credit for the overdraft fee or at least credit your utility account with the amount of the fee..Normally banks will only give 2 courtsey fees back..From there on it is your responsibility to make sure all is right with your account..Figure that most banks have millions of customers, they cannot follow each person around and hold their hands and tell them what to do each and every transaction.

ERROR-ERROR-ERROR!!!!

AUTHOR: Jim - (USA)

POSTED: Sunday, January 03, 2010

Here's what you said, and I quote, "I was charged overdraft fees unfairly due to misleading and untimely updates to online banking."

Here's what it should read, "I was charged overdraft fees because I DON'T MAINTAIN WRITTEN RECORDS of my checking account activity!"

You were charged NSF fees because YOU overdrafted your account, plain and simple.  YOU did this because YOU don't keep records and instead, use the lazy way.  Don't blame the bank because you can't/won't manage your own account.
