In dealing with these antiquated, and frequently found restrictions against pets, even fish, in a unit a comsumer owns, we too found it outrageous, especially with respect to an elderly individual living alone.  A number of studies have repeatedly shown that simply stroking a pet lowers blood pressure. Additional studies indicate that individuals over 65, with a pet, upon answering an assessment of quality of life, consistently report a higher quality of life than their petless cohorts. Perhaps the greatest argument for pet ownership is the indisputable fact making itself known more frequently now than ever, that pet owners tend to live longer than others.

Armed with this information,  more seniors are meeting with their doctors, who are well aware of these correlations. In the best interests of their patients, the doctors are writing that the  preferred pet is medically necessary to the patient's health. And sick of unreasonable condo restrictions, these are being upheld when challenged, despite their supposed violation to the bylaws. 

One note of caution: If you are able to get a pet aand the pet becomes a nuisance, such as barking at all hours etc.,it could be argued that your pet is a health hazard to others. So be practical and considerate, and all parties can be okay with the living conditions.
