It all started about a month ago. Someone hacked into my e-mail account and had control of it for about 12 hours. I called the different institutions that might have a stake in it and within those 12 hours I was fairly confident my identity was back safe.

15 days ago, as I was going thru my banking account I noticed not one, not two, but three different charges billed to me as SKYPE INTERNET. All the charges totaled about 60 USD. I immediately went thru the efforts of contacting Skype. I have never had a skype account. Never have used it, Never gave them my billing information. The only reason anyone could have access to this information was that whoever broke thru my e-mail account did it. However I still wanted a refund from Skype.

Little did I know that Skype seems to have ZERO customer support whatsoever. They dont have a phone number I could call. THeir 'support' e-mail doesn't even work. And their 'emergency' contact page never replies to my more than 10 e-mails I have sent them. The only way is to go into the Skype forums but you have to both download Skype and create an account with them to be able to post in those forums. Besides if that is the best thing they got, then thats fairly poor business practice for a supposedly worldwide company.

Now again I have found a charge to my account for Skype and the only thing i have left to do is to cancel my entire bank account. And any of you that have done that before and pay your bills know how much of a hassle that has become specially now around Christmas time.

I want Skype to pay me back and take a hold of their company. They have been irresponsible, and quite frankly inexistent. There is not reliable way of contacting them or even getting an explanation for the charges. Needless to say I am furious!

Advice on ID theft and similar experience

AUTHOR: judith - (USA)

POSTED: Wednesday, September 22, 2010

Hello, Hampton, VA,

I'm sorry about the internet fraud. I had a similar experience of ID theft but it was not withdrawals for skype transactions but charges on my phone vis-a-vis paypal online for chats to some ladies in obscure places in the Indian Ocean. I'm a female and my computer was in repairs so it definitely wasn't me.  I'm afraid your incident suggests someone had access to your bank account or personal information that allowed them to transact skype charges on your bank account. Skype would have no way of knowing this was fraudulent. You can file a fraudulent claim report with your bank and contact your local police.  It is prudent to close that bank account. Do you have updated firewall and antivirus protection on your ISP? Skype's customer service email (in Luxembourg) is en_support@skype.net but I don't think they are the source of the problem. A bank officer advised me to never ever surrender my bank card to an individual (e.g., in a restaurant, shop, etc.) where they can walk away from you and record your personal bank information.  Good luck.
