STAR CAPITAL SECURITIES INC NORTH AMERICAN SHOPPERS SWEEPSTAKERS CHATHAM Ontario

I received a letter informing me that I was a winner of North American Shoppers Sweepstakes that was held on May 5, 2008 with an enclosed check for $4,875.00. Check looks real but research over the internet provides that it is a scam. The letter states that I cannot cash it until I call the tax agent and send $2,975.00 dollars to cover government taxes due through MoneyGram or Western Union.

When the claim is processed I would receive the remaining winnings in a final check of 120,125.00, delivered by FedEx. I was told to contact Mr. George Stanley the claim agent and the letter was signed by Mrs. Brenda Hicks, the promotion manager.

When I called the number and asked the person how I won the sweepstakes he stated that Walmart or Homedepot had entered my name in a drawing because I had shopped there within the last year. I then called my local Walmart and spoke with the store manager who assured me that this was a scam.
