Sterling Savings Bank Sterling bank scam alert: Disregard text messages if you do not have an account with these people Houston Texas

To people in Texas, particularly the Houston and San Antonio area: A scam is circulating across the state where you receive a fraudulent text message or phone call from some company called Sterling. I received a text message from this company this morning telling me that I had "unusual activity" on my credit card and that I had to call a number to inquire further.

Some people have already reported this scam. Sterling Savings Bank has nothing to do with the scam. Someone is just erroneously using their name. I am writing this so that people will know what to look for. I deleted the message, but with the exception of the number I remember exactly what it looked like:

Sterling MSG: Sterling alert. Unusual activity. Please call [insert number].

I do not have a Sterling account, so I knew it was a scam and deleted the message. I also went on the Sterling web site and found that they do not even have a branch in Texas. Therefore, it is virtually impossible that anyone in Texas would have a Sterling account to begin with. I know people have also contacted headquarters, and Sterling confirmed the scam.

Please pass this message on to your friends and loved ones and alert them to the scam. I would also encourage anyone who receives a phone call or text message from these people to contact Sterling Savings Bank directly or inform the Better Business Bureau.
