When I called to order a Canon 100-400mm zoom lens I was told it would not perform correctly with my Canon 10D camera body. The sales rep suggested I purchase a Sigma 120-400mm zoom lens instead. The quoted price was $1,299. When I saw the lens for sale at other companies at around $900, I asked them to meet that price. I was told, "those lenses are not the professional edition". After I OKd the purchase, I called Sigma Corporation and was told by them that there is no professional edition of that lens.

Bottom line ... Thunder Cameras sales rep lied to me about this lens in order to sell the lens at about $400 more than other companies.

I have email exchanges documenting their lie.

The ever growing resume.

..Edgeman. Good work. Not that you need my approval for anything..but I am simply agreeing. And I happen to be in the industry.

Another entry on your ever growing resume Rozzy?  LOL!

Now you're in the camera industry!!!  And let's not forget your recent admission to being a "rock star" bass player who toured!

LMAO!

Is there anything you haven't done O Great and Powerful Roz?

Sadly, your pollution of ROR continues replete with your trademark hypocrisy.

You are right about Miami....

The advice you gave about Brooklyn applies to Miami (and even Boca Raton). If you see the vendor in those areas or from those areas or selling from those areas be extremely careful with an order of any type, not just camaras.

Not only that...but I was raised in NYC...born in Brooklyn..gray market was "invented" there. Miami has a "district" as well.

New name, same old stuff...

It appears that Thunder Cameras uses the same infamous business model as the Brooklyn camera stores.

What they do is buy a quantity of gray market (foreign) cameras and sell them in the United States. There is nothing inherently wrong with selling foreign cameras so long as they are advertised as such. These stores do not typically inform the consumer that the cameras are actually imports. This could cause problems as Nikon and Canon USA will not service gray market cameras. You would have to send the body into a service center in Malaysia or wherever the camera was originally built for.

Now here is the devious part. Let's say that you're in the market for a Nikon D3X which costs about $7,500 for the body here in the US. They will offer it for significantly cheaper. You place an order and they will ask you to call in order to verify the order. During this call they will pressure you into additional sales. For example, they will remove the battery from the box and offer to sell it to you for another $100. They may even try to pass off a cheap knockoff battery as an extended life battery and sell it for even more. You'll want a body cap for that camera, right? They'll let you have it for another $75. Oh, and did you need the cables that came with the camera? If you try to decline all of their upsells then they will cancel the order because they are "out of stock".

As the OP noted, they also will try to pass off lower grade lenses and sell them for significant markups. As you can read in this report, there is no "Pro" edition of that lens.

Your best bet is to check the big camera sellers such as B&H, Adorama, Cameta, Calumet and Amazon. If a seller is offering gear at a substantially lower price than those retailers, I'd be very wary.

Mystery Company ???

AUTHOR: John - (U.S.A.)

I'm always VERY leery of companies that do not have a real physical address. A P.O. box address is not very reassuring. Also, if you do a WHOIS lookup on their website you will find it has a 'private' registration. This is used to cloak the domain owners identity and address. Not too reassuring either.............

Always play it safe, if the address is in NYC (or any of its boroughs) or NJ just pass them by. Order on Amazon and avoid the games and risks.
