Repeatedly, when items are listed on sale via Zellers flyers as well as online, the items are not available at a Zellers store. I tried to purchase a 'Victory Garden Zero Gravity Bungee Chair' in late June on the first day of the sale.
By noon there were no chairs in stock. I tried locating stock via online searching - not a single Zellers store within 300 km of my house had a single chair in stock. A coincidence? Did someone purchase hundreds of these items when no one was looking? I don't think any Zellers location had more than one or two (if that) in stock but since customers arrive ready to spend money, they end up purchasing something else (usually at a higher price) so they feel like they have accomplished something.
Isn't that called the old "bait and switch" sales trick? I used an online form to complain to Zellers Corporate and was surprised to receive a reply! Unfortunately the rep "Susan" has yet to make good on her promise to transfer some stock to my local Zellers location. Phone calls to my local Zellers and numerous other locations proved useless as they all say the same thing. No stock - no plans to re-stock. Never had any to begin with...
To add further insult to injury... Zellers is advertising the ENTIRE LINE of zero gravity chairs (5 styles!) on sale AGAIN! They are 40% off and the sale ends July 18. Another sale?!? They don't have any stock from the previous sale?!?
What a joke. This kind of thing disgusts me and Zellers should be ashamed.

We refuse to shop at Zellers any more. Whenever there is an item we happened to want in the flyer, our local store tells us they never had any in stock to begin with; that our particular branch did not ever carry this product.
As the manager explained to me, the sales flyers are made up by headquarters with no input from store managers (so he said, and I believed him). Apparently, not all products are distributed to all stores, so some stores never see the items in the flyers.
Our store did try, at least once, to offer a different product for the price of the advertised one, however the advertised product was a well-known name brand, while the substitute was the store brand. Not that I'm dissing store brands, because some are quite good, but this particular product was not on a par (quality-wise) with the advertised brand. The supervisor in men's wear told me they (our store) had never had that product in stock, ever.
With each progressive "don't have" we lost a little more faith in Zellers, and now we no longer even bother to read the flyers. It's unfortunate, because headquarters is the one to blame, not local shops, but it's local shops that take the fall-out.

Then again with an username like pee_ode, what do I expect. Are you sure that was your husband in line and not your nine year old son. Seriously the sale ended last week. Your husband had to make a big scene. I bet people were snickering behind his back. Instead of giving him what he wanted they should have called the police to have him leave the store. Seriously the reason he acts nine is because people let him get away with his behavior.

similar experience with store failing to honour advertised price

My husband recently had a similar experience in the Zellers store in Sarnia. He went in for a few items including 12 pk Coca Cola. He noticed in the pop isle that the price was marked $4 and change and decided not to pay that much and headed for the check out.
There was a display right near the front of the store with a pyramid of coke products and a sign that was advertising $2.97/12pk. (the price was as in the previous flyer that had just expired the day prior). He gathered up several cases and went to check out.
Of course the pop scanned in at the $4+ and when he made mention the other display the cashier apologized and said that sale was over. He argued and said he was paying $2.97 as was posted. Next the manager had to be called and she too argued with my husband and tried to get out of honouring the price.
There was much insisting back and forth and eventually my husband won the battle (as he should have), not without many other customers witnessing the scene!
They tried to blame some stock boy for not removing the sign when he should have. Maybe so, but the posted price must be honoured in my opinion.
