I am a self-represented litigant who was targeted by attorney Christopher M. Brainard in what I believe was a campaign of harassment through excessive legal filings and abuse of court process.
Mr. Brainard filed multiple sanctions motions against me totaling over $35,000—including duplicative motions for the same issue, each with different hearing dates, designed to confuse and overwhelm me. He served documents by email even after I formally withdrew consent to electronic service under California law (Judicial Council Form EFS-006), which violated service rules and left me unaware of court deadlines.
He also emailed me a 261-page sanctions motion claiming I owed $29,500 in connection with a restraining order case. However, after checking court records, I discovered this document was never actually filed with the court. It appears it was sent only to scare me into compliance or to settle under pressure.
Additionally, Mr. Brainard filed two civil harassment restraining orders with highly questionable claims. One lacked a valid case number and was never served. The other was sent by email without court approval, again in violation of California procedure. These actions seemed timed to silence me after I submitted evidence to the court challenging the legitimacy of his filings and notices.
He even contacted my mortgage company and lienholder using court filings I believe were materially misleading, causing interference with my property and escrow.
This experience has caused me severe stress, disrupted my finances, and made me feel that the legal system was being weaponized against me. In my opinion, these actions were designed not to seek justice but to intimidate, confuse, and financially exhaust me.
I am sharing this to warn other, especially self-represented individuals, that this attorney’s approach to litigation can be extremely aggressive, and in my case, felt retaliatory and unethical.

UPDATE: 2 DUIs, Vandalism, Resisting Arrest – CA Attorney Christopher M. Brainard (Bar #199444) Given Diversion by State Bar
AUTHOR: Anonymous - (United States)
SUBMITTED: Sunday, June 01, 2025
Christopher M. Brainard, an actively licensed California attorney (Bar #199444), has a serious and well-documented criminal history. Public court records from Los Angeles County show convictions for multiple DUIs, vandalism, and resisting arrest. Despite this, the California State Bar placed him in a “diversion” program, allowing him to continue practicing law without public discipline.
-
DUI – 1994
Case No. 94M02167 (Santa Monica Courthouse)
Convicted under VC §§ 23152(a) & 23152(b), fined $360, 3 years probation, and ordered to complete an alcohol education program. Driving restricted for 90 days. -
DUI – 2007
Case No. 7WA01826 (Airport Courthouse)
Fined $390, sentenced to 36 months probation, and again ordered into a first-offender alcohol program. This marks his second DUI case on record. -
Vandalism & Resisting Arrest – 1991
Case No. 91M00462 (Beverly Hills Courthouse)
Charged under PC §§ 594(a) and 148(a). Case resolved only after restitution. No dismissal based on innocence.
These are not dismissed by innocence — these are probation-based resolutions or PC § 1203.4 dismissals, which do not erase the convictions. They remain public and serious.
Even with this background, the California Bar chose to place him in a quiet diversion program, avoiding real public discipline or disbarment. This is deeply concerning for public safety and legal integrity.
Search his Bar Number: 199444 on calbar.ca.gov or verify these case numbers through the Los Angeles Superior Court system. Don’t trust this attorney blindly. Do your research.
