Disorganized, Unprofessional Interview Process with Biased Assessment

I recently interviewed with Progressive and was shocked at the level of unprofessionalism displayed by their representative. The interviewer showed up wearing a tie-dyed sweatshirt—hardly the appearance of someone representing a major organization. I half-expected them to show up with a surfboard next. Despite spending significant time preparing and passing multiple tests to get to this stage, the representative only asked 2 out of the 8 questions that were stated in the prior email—questions I spent two hours preparing for.

To add context: I declined another opportunity I was already accepted into that pays $30–$50/hour (albeit only two days a week) to pursue this role. I currently hold the #1 ranking nationwide at my 1099 position, where I’m placed with various companies to improve their performance stats. I've maintained this standing consistently, working roughly 30 hours per position—about 60 hours weekly—for the past six years. Despite this, the interviewer told me, “I’m concerned about you working a full-time job.” Since when is 60 hours not considered full-time?

What’s more frustrating is their follow-up message claimed other candidates showed stronger:

Independent decision-making

Adaptability and openness to change

Successful negotiation experience

Yet in my rare opportunity to answer a question, I gave a strong example: I successfully upsold a business phone to a client on behalf of AT&T by researching alternatives, identifying the best option to replace a cracked, non-repairable device, and closing the sale using adaptive and consultative techniques. What exactly was wrong with that example?

In my prior pre-recorded responses, I explained how I use tools like TextExpander to improve speed and efficiency—demonstrating clear adaptability and inventiveness.

It’s disappointing to be dismissed in such a careless and incomplete manner. This isn’t my first interaction with this company. Years ago, I was accepted into a role here, and the interviewer at that time was exceptional—professional, thorough, and even expressed how impressed she was with my responses. I had to opt out of that position during training for personal health reasons, and I gave them notice.

This recent interview was the opposite experience: rushed, incomplete, and seemingly biased. I’ve seen inconsistent behavior from representatives—some are rushed and inattentive, some talk the entire time, then cut the interview short and somehow blame the candidate. It’s hard to take their assessment seriously when they didn’t even complete the process.

And the irony? They claim to stand for “equity, justice, and systemic reform.” If that’s true, their hiring practices should reflect those values with clarity, honesty, and professionalism—not rushed interviews, biased judgments, and unprofessional conduct.

Reached a compromise, still screws me

AUTHOR: Craig - (United States)

POSTED: Thursday, May 22, 2025

After talking to a nice lady very good at her job and protecting the company follies. I'll keep her name out of it for protection. She went over the fact that customer service is used in all 3 possible roles applied for. Which I knew they would say but that's just one part. So I showed her an example of my exemplary customer service that helps me be ranked #1 in the nation at my current role. I used an example I would've used during the interview should they had of asked like theyre supposed to. I used an example of a frustrated member from AAA telling me to finger F myself because his driver turned away. I reviewed the notes, saw the driver turned away because of an iced driveway and AAA policy is to have a driveway you can enter so the tow truck doesn't get stuck too. I acknowledged his frustration and told him the why, then offered to re dispatch if he just puts some salt down so they can enter. He continued to tell me to finger F myself that his kid has a baseball game soon..I acknowledged his frustration and reiterated, i know youre frustrated with the game coming up and being stuck, ill gladly redispatch if you would sir, I'll do this for you He eventually agreed, and at the end of the call, i said I hope your son hits 4 homeruns I think at that moment the defensive representative realized they completely screwed up not asking all the questions so I could of shown my customer service. Another concern, they said i didn't show independent decision making and being inventive. I reiterated an example in a previous 8 question video how i went out and utilized a text expander short cut application to notate two different programs at a time quicker Another question not asked during the cut short interview yet i got downtalked for not being independent in a follow up email. Makes me think they barely reviewed my 8 video questions. The nice lady also told me in a professional manner to protect the company plus the mess up, that my the email aboot my next interview did not indicate the same questions would be asked. Let's let a non biased resource decide; neither me nor progressive.. as i prepared for the same or similiar questions.. exact phrasing is quoted here in their email ChatGPT You said: "we ask that you prepare to answer different examples from the ones already provided" Elaborate on this and tell me if this means the same questions will be asked? Explain ChatGPT said: This phrase — "we ask that you prepare to answer different examples from the ones already provided" — means the interviewers may ask similar or the same questions as before (for example, about how you handle conflict, meet goals, or solve problems), but they want you to give different examples than the ones you've already shared, perhaps in your application, a prior interview, or an assessment. Here's a breakdown: Same types of questions: Yes, you should expect similar behavioral or situational questions. E.g., "Tell me about a time you went above and beyond," or "Describe a situation where you had to handle a difficult customer." Different stories/examples: You should not reuse the same story or situation you used before. They want fresh, distinct examples to assess your range of experience and consistency. ... The kind lady told me to reapply in another 6 months instead of the normal 1 year. I think they half understand that yes, they messed up. I'll accept the compromise but this hurts. My company due to trump according to him has lost alot of work and my hours have gone down. I know progressive on the inside is easy going, professional and etc.. good pay, consistent work.. cares... Pays pto and health showing they care This hurts me in ten ways to one.. im not convinced what so ever they didn't screw up It's fine, thats life, I'll suck it up and struggle on Atleast they compromised their mistakes I guess I passed up on an opportunity for a $30-50 hr job for them, only 2 days a week but it would help leverage my current loss of work. And in six months, who's to say this position will be available or the talent pool won't be overwhelming I even have years of remote work, working independently on behalf of alot of companies being #1 in the nation, winning clients over for it. My company just doesn't have the volume. I could of done all 3 positions offered easily, I shouldn't of been a hard choice, I should of been a top choice. Oh well, that's why corporate gets corporate reputations, the human side is taken out of the equation. Only policies and procedures matter, even if they mess up. I still hope to work for them, unless you go into business for yourself, this is the logistics of all employers pretty much.
