I changed my insurance coverage to a replacement policy about 5 years ago or so. I had contacted the local AAA location and asked for a review of my coverage. I was talked into paying for a replacement policy if something happend to the contents of my home. It sounded resonable that if something happend I would need to replace the contents of my home.

On November 7th of 2014 my house was robbed. It was very traumaizing since my teenage son found the damage when he came home. The robber took a good amount of my jewelry. I have purchased pieces since high school. I am now in my 50's. Well all of a sudden AAA says "oh you only have $2500 of coverage for your jewelry." This is TOTALLY false... I was lied to. I asked them to go back to when the change to my policy was made so they could see that I had coverage for REPLACEMENT value on my jewelry. They refused. They gave me a lousy $2500 and refused to pay the rest of the amount due to me. There was about $25000.00 worth of jewelry stolen from my home. AAA has totally ripped me off. We were traumatized by the robber and re-traumatized by the AAA claims process. I will tell EVERYONE in EVERY way I can to let people know how I was taken advantage of by AAA. They did not even care enough to work with me to go back to when the change was made to my policy. I paid my premiums in good faith and ON TIME. Its unfortunate AAA could not do the same with their claims. AAA owes me over $20000.00. BUYER BEWARE!!! They will gladly take your money but god forbid you have a claim. I have had this insurance for about 8 years ... I have been loyal to them while AAA has completly screwed me.

Insurance Contract

AUTHOR: Triple H - (USA)

POSTED: Friday, July 10, 2015

 Good afternoon,

I'm sorry to hear of your misfortunes, however consumers need to be educated on insurance and how it works.
Replacement cost means  the cost to replace the property on the same premises with other property of comparable material and quality used for the same purpose. This applies unless the limit of insurance or the cost actually spent to repair or replace the damaged property is less. Refer to your policy for the exact definition and explanation of replacement cost. This is up to the limits of your policy.  So, as you stated, your policy limits was $2500 for jewelry.
This means that your insurance company would replace the jewelry, up to a limit of $2500.
This is exactly what you paid you.
When your policy is first "written" you receive a declarations page, this would have included the following :

  • Name and Address of the Policy Holder and Insurance Company
  • Information on How to Contact the Insurance Company for Questions or a Claim
  • What the Insurance Policy is For and How Much Coverage
  • How Long the Insurance Policy is Valid
  • Any Endorsements, Additions, Changes or Discounts on the Policy

This packet would have contained your contract as well (which you said you filed away, then shredded)  This contract defines what is and what is not covered.  Definitions of such words as "replacement cost" and "named insured" etc.

The only wrong-doing perhaps was your agent not listening to you, when/if you told him you had over $20,000 in jewelry.  There can be additional endorsements or stand-alone policies (inland marine/floater, personal articles policy) that would have covered your additional jewelry.
I would highly recommend getting your contract and reading it.  This would have clearly explained what your policy covered, from what perils, and up to what limits.

Yes they did send me paperwork. Filed away in a drawer for a number of years and then shredded.

Question..

After your change in policy, didn't they send you new paperwork with the coverage and deductible information?  Wouldn't that show the change you are referring to?  I'm not an insurance person, just a curious homeowner.
