It is called lying by omission when Advanced Cable and other internet service providers advertise "blazing high speed internet services" of up to 30 Megs per second.  Let me explain...  A moderately fast internet connection speed for home use would be 4 Megabytes (MBps) per second.  When Advanced Cable advertises on TV or Internet, they advertise using the term "MEGS" per second, which they define as Megebits (Mbps).

To a normal person not familiar with internet terminology, Megabytes (MBps) is 8 times faster than Megabits (Mbps).  The upper case "B" is Megabytes and the lower case "b" is Megabits. In my case, I have had Advanced Cable service for both cable TV and internet service from 2007 to current.  Whe I initially purchased services in 2007, I paid for Cable Services and 6 Megabyte internet service. This was from 2007 t0 2011.  Then I moved to another apartment in the same complex and had to cut off service from my old apartment and re-connect to my new apartment.

I speaking with the sales person about transferring service from one apartment to another, he asked if I wanted 15 Meg (not Megabytes) high speed internet service for less money than I was previously paying.  Of course I said yes.

Little did I know that the sales pitch technical terminology had changed to Megs, not meaning Megabytes but Megabits.  So instead of receiving 4 Megabytes per second, I am now receiving 2 Megabytes per second, or 8 times less because of the deceiving terminology used by sales and marketing personnel  at Advanced Cable.

These deceptive marketing, advertising and sales efforts are not unique to Advanced Cable, but extend Comcast and ATT as well.

To add fuel to the fire, slowly over the months the internet connectivity has been getting slower and slower.  There are currently no guidelines or monitoring of ISP's in the US when it comes to these false advertising claims, and if someone tries to complain, most people do not know enough about the technology to detect the problems.  There needs to be legislation to protect the consumer as with the other public service sectors like telephone and power.... this is getting way out-of-hand

Confusion about Internet data rates explained

AUTHOR: OldGeek - (USA)

POSTED: Friday, December 16, 2016

I am an Advanced Cable customer since 2009, I am NOT a fan of Advanced cable, I think they have many faults, mainly that they cost too much and manipulate the bill constantly to gain revenue (which i understand because they are dyeing).  But i am retired and dont need $5, $10, $15 additions to my monthly bill.

I have 40 years of IT experience, much of it in networking at companies such as Boeing and Microsoft.  I have been a internet user since 1989 when my division at Boeing bought into the CISNet Commercial Internet Service ( think thats what it was called) It was hugely expensive requireing expensive routers, T1 lines, an entry fee of about $25,000, and other expenses.

In general networking/communications providers measure data rates in bits per second.  Bytes per second are subject to a lot of misunderstanding.  Ex:  A 10 Megabyte file will typically generate a 12 to 13 Megabit datastream.  The protocols used to transmit the data typically add 25% to the size of the datastream.

While I cannot comment on what the consumer heard over the phone, the Advanced cable website fpr the 2005-2007 timeframe(via the internet Wayback machine) consistently uses Mbps (megabits per second) in the 4 to 7 Mbps range.

I challenge the assertion of the report that the consumer had a 4 megaByte internet service plan in 2007-2011.  That would have been 32 Megabits per second and those speeds were simply not available at that time through Advanced Cable.  My recollection of the industry is that no one was providing those speeds over a standard consumer broadband network.

In the 2007 to 2010 timeframe, when i first started using Advanced cable I had very fast internet and may well have approached 4 megaBytes per second,  But I never believed that I had a 4 MByte/32 Mbit service.  That makes sense as the typical broadband channel maxed out at 30 mbits/second.  I was surprised at how fast the internet was in that time frame.  But these were shared channels and the more folks that used them the apparent speed would have dropped. I recall doing speed tests on Saturday night and getting substantially lower results than a tuesday night test.

As I said earlier I am not an Advanced Cable fan, but this issue is the least of their shortcomings.

i ran a speed test tonight and got 14 Mbps download and 1.33 Mbps upload.  The last number is critical to me as I have a network backup service and I'm trying to back up several hundred gigabytes of data.
