I constantly received emails from Air Tran advertising low fares from White Plains NY to Atlanta Georgia. On March 12, 2009, My friend and I purchased two round trips tickets from White Plains, NY to Atlanta Georgia. We were charged 15 per bag and we had two and I was charged an additional $39.00 because according to the rep at the counter my bag was oversize. I spent four days and on my return trip from Atlanta to White Plains, NY, I went to the trouble of removing most of my luggage from the suitcase and sending it via UPS to avoid the suitcase being bulky. This did not help me because even though the suitcase was under weight the top compartments caused the suitcase to appear larger than it actually was. Also, the agent did not help by barely douching the suitcase against the counter and measuring the circumference, he told me the suitcase was over the acceptable size and that I would have to pay an additional $39.00. I asked him how large should the suitcase be, he told me,61 inches and your suitcase was 61 and inches. I did not know Air Tran had this policy that one had to purchase a special sized luggage to fly on their airline without incurring a fee. I went back to their website and I had to search several times before I found any information pertaining to this. I believe Air Tran is using underhand practices to rob consumers of their hard earned money, in this economy. Also, the fact that they charged me for the same bag twice, knowing I would have no other option but to return home with my luggage empty or full, I would be charged again. Consequently, I paid an additional $108.00 in fees to Air Tran for the same piece of luggage, which weighed less than 40 lbs.

I have blocked their emails and I will not fly Air Tran anytime soon.

I had the same thing happened to me, I was nickel and dimed also. I was flying from Raleigh (RDU) to Atlanta (ATL) anf the ticket counter lady eye balled my bag and said it was a $39 charge because it was too big. While at Los Angeles (LAX) they didn't charge me it was fine in L.A. but in Raleigh she tried to find a way to hit me with a charge to a point the she had her foot in the scale to have it weight more than 50lbs.
