I bought two items at an Albertsons Store in Southern California for a total of over $60.
I paid in cash. I went to return the items, unopened, the same day as it was the wrong item and the store manager on duty would not refund the cash even with the receipt. He said they would only refund up to $10. For purchases greater than $10, the money would be put on a store money card / gift card. I said why, I never heard this before; he replied store policy. I asked him to show me the policy and indeed by the cash register in miniscule writing the policy was there
Well Albertsons is stealing my money because
a) this $10 maximum refund policy is very unusual in retail; as such they should have notified me when I bought the item that there was no refund allowed but store credit. Once I bought the item since they would not give me my money back they effectively stole my cash and forced me to have to buy more merchandise at their stores at often inflated prices.
This is a scam and is outrageous. I will never shop again at any Albertsons.

So they did inform you when you bought the item of the return policy. I agree its unusual, but you could have read the sign on the register.
