When you purchase an airline ticket, consumers are asked if they want to purchase insurance.   There is not description of what is and is not covered, other than if a person would like to protect their travel, they should consider insurance.

I purchased a recent ticket on US AIR.   Due to unforseen circumstances, my son, who the ticket was for had to come home early from his out of state government employer.

I went to file a claim and was told that there was no coverage.   Basically, unless he died or was terminally ill, the company had no intention of paying.   I tried to explain the circumstances and they would hear nothing of it.   As a veteran in the insurance industry, my view is that they are engaging in both a deceptive trade practice and acting in bad faith.

I would caution anyone to steer clear of these travel scams that are designed to keep the public misinformed as to what truly is, or rather, is not covered.

Hello -
Jackie from the Help Team here. Were sorry that the insurance you purchased did not provide you with the coverage you had hoped it would. I dont know the exact details of your case, but please note that travel insurance is like any other type of insurance in that there are terms and conditions that determine if a claim is payable. We, as well as our partners, want consumers to make informed decisions when it comes to travel insurance. When the insurance is offered, we make sure that we indicate that Limitations apply and provide a link which consumers may use if they want to review the terms and conditions. After purchase, we email our customers a complete copy of the insurance policy and they have 10 days to review it, during which we will provide them with a full refund of their premium should they feel that it does not meet their needs.

Should you have additional questions on the outcome of your claim, or if youd like to get a better understanding of the policy you purchased, please call our customer service line at 1-800-419-8016. Once again, we apologize we were unable to cover you in your situation.

Regards,
Jackie, Help Team

There is no way you are  "a veteran in the insurance industry"

" When you purchase an airline ticket, consumers are asked if they want to purchase insurance.  "

"Insurance" is a pretty generic term.

" There is not description of what is and is not covered, other than if a person would like to protect their travel, they should consider insurance.  "

Listen to what you're saying.   You agreed to buy "insurance" without knowing what it covers?

Here's the bottom line, if you didn't even know what was covered when you bought it, how can you now claim it is a ripoff when it doesn't turn out to cover what you later decided should be covered?    You don't get to determine what is covered, AFTER you buy it.  That's not how insurance works.  Most people who are not veterans of the insurance industry are aware of this.

On the other hand, I do agree that most of these travel policies (as well as just about any point of sale policy) is not worth much of anything.   There is a reason that they are sold without revealing the terms.  What surprises me is that you would not know this.
