I have recieved several calls from a 800 number asking me to call them back. They said they were a debt collection agency. This is suprising, as I am very good about my bills, and I have never recieved anything in the mail about an unpaid bill.
I finally called them, hoping the calls would stop. A woman answered, I didn't get a name, and she asked for my phone number. I gave it to her. "To confirm my identity", she asked for my address and date of birth. I told her I didn't want to give it, since I didn't know who was calling me. (I have heard of similar scams, usually they ask for Social Security Number, but I didn't want to take the risk with my address or birthdate.) She said that legally she could not discuss the account with me until she confirmed my identity. She also assured me that she already had my date of birth, address, social security number, and employer right in front of her. I said, "Well, I don't feel comfortable with this, so can you mail me the bill, because I don't know of owing anything and if I get a bill I will be happy to pay." (I assure you, I was very polite.) Then she said, "In order to do that you need to give me your address so that we can make sure we send it to the current address." The alarm went off in my head, and I realized that this woman may not have ANY information aobut me, so I said, "That's not gonna happen" (I got a little rude.) She said, "Fine, then we'll just take legal action!"
Now, this had me worried for a little bit, but the more I think about it, the more I realize that she was simply fishing for information and mad that I wouldn't give it, especilly since I don't have any outstanding bills. I hope so, anyway.

hoping to help

im sorry to hear someone in my industry was so rude. by fdcpa guidlines we really only need to varify by first and last name. for ur protection most compaines do like to varify by address or ssn.. i myself when calling people or even if they call my office i always make sure i have the correct person by name and then say to confirm im speaking to the correct ms smith i have ur address as 123 fake street. plus by law a collection company (3rd party) is required to send whats called an 809 letter to the consumer the letter must go out the first 5 days the company has the acct.....

any and all questions can be answered by looking a the fdcpa (u can google it as i dont remember the site off the top of my head)

also i have personally delt with this company and they are rude and forget many fdcpa laws when speaking to a creditor i had one rep tell me to give up my dog because she cost to much to feed which is why i couldnt pay the debt and at the end of the converstation told me she hopes my dog dies soon so i can take care of my debt..

hope this helps

That is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. What are we going to get out of knowing your address and birth date? Do you know how many people live on the same street as you? Or how many people have the same birthday as you?
Chances are If you are being called and told that you owe money, you owe a debt. Believe it or not people make mistakes and think they pay things off when they don't.
The smart thing to do? Verify that it is you. If it isn't you we are looking for, we won't call you. All you do by refusing to identify whether you are or are not the person we are looking for, is making us pretty sure that like most debtors, you are avoiding your debt.
