Have insurance policy with Allstate. On 1/6/14 Detroit area got hit with snow and extreme cold. I am out of town . Wife called that night and said roof was making cracking, booming, straining sounds. Advised her to get herself and kids out. Called Allstate claims. They took report, issued claims adjuster and said as soon as possible call company to remove some of the 12" of snow off roof. She supplied me with some phone numbers.

Next day, company came out, removed snow around perimeter of roof (did not go on roof), and went into attic to inspect. This is a ranch home built in late 50's with roof in average condition. Shingles about 9-10 years old.

He found 2 broken trusses right away. He temporarily braced them into insurance adjuster can inspect.

Friday, adjuster finally came out. Never inspected structural integrity of roof. Would not sign anything stating house was safe to live in, explained what wasn't covered then left.

I pay quite a hefty premium for full coverage insurance from Allstate.

I have heard there good hands are together when collectng premiums then open up when submitting claims.

Then they want people to feel sorry when they rip-off insurane companies. They are no better.

Is there anyone honest out there these days?

Get 2nd opinion on all Denials!

AUTHOR: ClaimAdvocate - ()

POSTED: Friday, February 28, 2014

AS a 40 yr claim advocate inside and outside of many national carriers, you should always get a second opinon, not from the agent who is not impartial as his loss ratio is affected on every claim paid. Certainly dont use an insurance contractor, those ABC companies who are sent out by the agent or insurer, they work for the pleasure and future benefit of the carrier, not you. Ive caught almost everyone of them now and then in deceptive practices and distortions on bids until you sign a contract with them, then its all covered damages and inflated supplementals. There is no such thing as a free bid.

We have reversed 16 out of 16 denials with Allstate claims last year. Its a gamesmanship and all about underwriting terms of the policy  and nothing to do with getting more bids. Most denials are based on faulty investigation, indifference and inexperience of the adjuster. What you say can and will be used against you. Dont sing like a carnary to the adjuster, let him determine your loss, its his job , not yours. He knows the coverage maze and can help you or hurt your claim by your remarks.

At this point if he found 2 broken rafters, you may have coverage since I assume you have an all risk policy. It only states which perils are not covered and what property is excluded, not what is covered.  Collapse due to weight of ice and snow is a covered peril with specific exclusions. Water intrusion is also an ensuing loss covered. Not sure what they could dream up to deny your claim. but something sounds fishy.  Do mitigate any damages as a reasonable person would. That does not mean you have to spend money they did not give you to make repairs. Just cover it up with plastic.

Now get claim help from a claim advocate, one who has worked inside the carriers and not a contractor acting like a public adjuster by wrting an estimate. As I stated a hundred contracor bids will not reverse your claim, its not about damages but all about underwriting, loss control and rating terms of your risk. Also it will take a public adjuster/advocate that knows how the claim core process works inside. Those on the outside like attorneys and contractors haven't a clue.

Seek out a Claim Advocate licensed in Indiana or Michigan that can help reverse your claim and then appraise the real damages.

That should be handled by your city's building inspector.  If they find it unsafe, you will likely be told to move out.

I don't know about your other issues with Allstate, but this is the time to read YOUR policy for what's covered and what is not.  Then you can knowledgeably discuss it with them.  Good luck to you.
