American General Financial Services Wr financed for $4600 and ended up paying over 7 thousand dollars Galesburg Illinois

Back in 2006 we financed a hot tub with American General for around $4,600. It was the six months same as cash deal. We didn't get it all payed off in the six months and now are going to have to pay over 7 thousand dollars.
Within the six months we did pay over 2 thousand dollars at once but it seems like that money never even touched our account. I called and asked what was going on after recieveing a statement that really said nothing but the fact that we owed over 7 thousand dollars. There was no interest rates on there or the fact that our payments were applied nothing. They were not very helpful and had little explanation for this.
I have had other people mention this company and I tell them to run the other way because this is horrible. There is no way I should owe that much money still but I can't figure out how to deal with this.
Right now I owe around what we financed still. I just want my balance to reflect the money I paid so I don't have to pay as much.
