Because AT&T claimed that my account may have been compromised, they sent a letter stating that my account had been closed and that I would be receiving a new card and account number. In the meantime, I couldn't access my account (I pay on-line), so I was a few days late with my payment in August.

This account had been open for years and I had never missed a payment, and I also had a great credit score. When my November statement arrived I was shocked to see that they wanted five times the normal minimum payment. They had tacked on fees and said I was three days late with my November payment. The fees were almost $800.00 and my interest rate was suddenly 32%.

I talked to three customer service representatives and e-mailed the company twice. They absolutely refused to discuss the situation without me paying all the fees first. In fact the first customer service rep. couldn't see anything in my account to trigger such fees and interest rates, but still could do nothing until I paid them.

I paid off the account and closed it in November. Then, on December 14th I received a statement telling me I owe them $78 for interest from the time I made my payment and the time that they decided to post it.

They are definitley rip-off artists.

As a addendum, I would like to note that I'm not done with them. I mailed everything to the Iowa State Attorney General and just received a letter stating that he has forwarded the complaint to a more appropriate agency. He stated he felt that agency would respond after reviewing my information.

I hope others having the same problem, I've read several that are similar, will contact your state agencies and help stop this scam.
