Now, all of a sudden we get our statement and we find that they have changed our rate to 28.74%! So, we call them up and ask them what on earth they think they are doing charging us this rate when we had a promise of 6.9%. The rep tells us they have a clause in there that says if the "performance" of the account changes they can increase the rate.
So, we ask, "how did the performance of the account change"? We have always made our payments on time and usually pay above the required minimum and have excellant credit across the board with all creditors. First, they tried to claim that we had "negative credit items on our report and they just found them" which we told them was absurd! Luckily we have real time access to our credit report and pulled a report online while still talking with the lying rep who then said they had to put us on hold to get a manager (which means a better liar!)
The more seasoned liar gets on the phone with us and tries to convince us we have had late payments with other creditors and we tell them we have a credit report right in our hands and that is a outright lie! They then put us on hold and a few minutes later come back on the line and say that they have our report to and we are right, we have excellant credit and do not show late payments. So, we ask again, why are you charging us 28.74% on our balance transfer? This time they come back with they increased the rate becuase we have several large outstanding balances with other creditors and that we are a higher risk to them and that falls under their "performance" clause.
We argued with them for several minutes that other outstanding balances, all of which are paid on time and have never had a late payment are not a "performance issue" and that performance means payment history, not balance totals! They of course do not want to hear this and say they cannot argue this all day and we are stuck with this rate and it is to bad for us.
These people are lying, cheating theives who go around tricking people into moving their balances over to them and then they try to pull a fast one on your and jack your rate up to levels that even a loan shark wouldn't charge!
The owner of this credit card is an elderly lady nearing her 80th birthday and is being victimized by AT&T and their lying band of thieves. I know their are laws to protect the elderly and we are going to be looking into this further and would welcome hearing from anybody else who has been victimized by AT&T with this unethical and most likely illegal activity.
