I bought a puppy from Barkworks for $1,500 about a month ago. At first we thought he was a great puppy, really mellow, not too much energy and loved to cuddle in our laps. However, we had a couple of concerns: the dog barely ate or drank (the pet store informed us that this was "normal" as he was not used to his surroundings and recommended that we give him an appetite stimulator). As we spent more time with him, we noticed that each day his engery level was decreasing. On the fourth day after we got him we noticed thick green snot in his nose, he was sneezing and he was having significant trouble breathing.

We took him to our Vet and she was extremely concerned about our dog's condition. He had pneumonia and required hospitalization. After $1,500 in vet bills, he was finally feeling better and able to come home. We are certain that the breeder (they say he came from a breeder- but nothing comes up for the breeder when I search in google) and the pet store did not provide a safe and clean environment.

Since we've had him home, I've found out that several people in our neighborhood have purchased dogs from Barkworks only to find out that the dogs are sick and in dire need of medical care (distemper, parvo, pneumonia, respiratory infections- most requiring hospitalization). I feel good that we "saved" our dog from anymore time locked up in a cage and got him the medical treatment he needed, but I will never step foot in Barkworks again. A person or business that truly cares about animals and their welfare would not continuously sell sick dogs. Either that, or they need to hire a new vet that can actually determine when a dog is sick and provide it with the proper medical treatment it needs and deserves

upper respiratory infections in puppies

AUTHOR: Julia - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Monday, September 29, 2008

Dear Anonymous,

unfortunately it is very common for puppies to come up with a cold when they go home with their new family. Given that they are too young to be fully vaccinated, their ability to fight upper respiratory infections is limited and if not treated in the early stages it can lead to pneumonia. This is one of the reasons why we send our puppies home with a 15 day general health guarantee that covers cases like the one you describe.

It is completely untrue that we provide an unsafe and unhealthy environment in our store. We take pride in the way we take care of our puppies, we have a vet that comes in once a week and a vet tech on staff that comes to the store several times a week. In addition to that we train our employees in recognizing puppies that need special attention or medical help.

We NEVER had a distemper case. Unfortunately parvo is a disease that everybody involved with puppies struggles with, so do we, but fortunately not on a regular basis.

Most of our breeders do not have a web site because they only breed for us and have no need to advertise their puppies to the general public.
