We know of several local people who are upset with BBT but we had no idea the problems we have had are expanded to all the states in which they do business.
Be aware that they hold all deposited checks for one day UNLESS the check you are depositing is from another customer's BBT account. This includes government checks as well (tax returns, social security, etc.). However, you may take that same check to the window, cash it, deposit the cash and that transaction will be credited immediately.
After much frustration and arguing, they did reimburse over $300 to our account in NSF fees. The reason for those fees? We deposited our tax refund, then later (same day) made the hideous mistake of making phone payments with our ATM card to a couple of our creditors. We then purchased a large appliance using our ATM. Their reasoning for the NSF fees? We were spending money that wasn't officially in our account. Thank Goodness our receipts indicated the time of all our transactions or they would have kept approximately 1/3 of the tax refund we deposited.
However, this happens often - an every day occurrence for this bank! Warning: They charge $35 for each NSF occurrence, then include the $35 in your overdraft protection account AND charge you interest on that account.

Show me a statement in which BB&T debits your account for an OD/NSF fee and then some how moves that fee on to "overdraft protection" and then charges you interest. You are not only mistaken, but INCORRECT.
If you have "overdraft protection" that is avalible for use in covering items that are coming through you account for payment, you would NEVER be debited for an OD/NSF fee.
I'm so tired of consumers not taking responsiblity for their ACTIONS. Be informed! Read the information that is given to you at the time of account opening, read the flyers and posters that are 5 feet tall hanging in the branch.
Educate yourself!

You should be praising them for giving you back your fees. The bank's policy is clear about funds not being available until cleared, and that debits are posted before credits at nightly update. Even a check with immediate availability (like a tax refund) is not available until the update.
You spent money that wasn't yet available in your account, and they would have been within their rights to fee you for that. I think it speaks well for that bank that they realized you were misinformed, and did not penalize you for that.
