On Sept 30, 2006 (less than 6 months ago) I bought an Insignia (made by Best Buy, according to the salesperson) DVD player. It was the model NS-DVD1. It came with a 90 day warranty.
Last night the belt on the loading tray broke (I opened it to verify the problem since it is out of warranty). I called to get a replacement (fully expecting to be able to buy it), and was told that a replacement belt was not available.
I understand that belts do wear out (although not usually in under 6 months, unless they're really poor quality) but I do not understand them not carrying such common replacement parts or at least telling me where I can get them.
Perhaps the idea is that they want me to buy another DVD player after a little over 5 months? I guess at this point I'll have to, but it won't be from Best Buy. I'll have to find a more honest, professional source for my future electronics needs.

Get what you pay for

Two things,
You purchased the most inexpensive DVD player best buy offers it's not going to purr like a lion or anything.
Secondly, Best Buy actually does offer replacement parts unlike many other electronic retailers. It is called part search and you can get to it through the Bestbuy website. The DVD player you purchased did not have the parts available because the item is no longer carried or manufactured. If the item was active and still receiving shipments in of it the parts would be available for purchase.
It certainly is not a rip off because the item is no longer manufactured and there for parts not being available. It's merely a fact of purchasing anything electronic now-a-days with all of the new electronics coming out so quickly.

Not Best Buy's Problem

I agree with the previous comments. Be thankful you were outside of your warranty when you opened the DVD player because then the warranty would've been null and void. Here is a hint: DO YOUR RESEARCH. Whenever I buy something like a new DVD player or TV I ALWAYS ask about HOW to get a replacement part of I need one and how much they cost approximately. Also ask for the phone # to call if you need that information and they don't have it on hand. If you go up to customer service they have the manufacturer warranty available. Also most of those products have a 1 year man. warranty.

DVD players have become a throwaway item

You can buy a DVD player for $20 to $240. The $240 unit is a high-performance HDMI DVD player that up-converts standard DVD's to 720p, 1080i, 1080p.
Also you may be able to find a will-fit belt. I suspect that many brands of players use the same standard parts.

not a ripoff

This is clearly not a ripoff and has no good reason to be posted on this website. Not carrying a replacement part for a particular product is by no means a ripoff. You seriously cannot expect any store to carry replacement parts for every product that they sell. Thats just unreasonable.
