Big Lots Stores baits customers with online coupons linked by email, which you print from your computer to use at a store, and then the coupons are rejected at checkout.

I received an email linking to a coupon for $5.00 off of a $20.00 purchase or $15.00 off of a $75.00 purchase. The coupon was good beginning 7/15/2016 until 7/24/2016. When I printed the coupon, it stated clearly at the top that the expiration date is 7/24/2016.

On 7/20/2016, I went to the Big Lots store located in Bloomington, IN. There were a few items I needed immediately, and I picked up a few additional items I would need in the near future, and would have otherwise bought elsewhere, since I had the coupon.

My purchase came to just under $40.00. The cashier scanned my Rewards card and then the coupon. After I paid with a debit card and was given a receipt, I looked over the receipt before leaving the store while the cashier rang up another customer.

The $5.00 had not been deducted from my purchase, either by deducting a portion from each item or the entire $5.00 at the end of the purchase. After the cashier finished ringing up the other customer's purchase, I stepped back over to the counter and informed the cashier of the problem.

The cashier looked over my receipt and agreed that the $5.00 had not been deducted. She said that the computer had rejected my coupon and there was nothing she could do.

Another cashier came over to help. The first cashier, who rang up my purchase, told her the coupon had expired in the system. The other cashier offered to call the manager, but the first cashier told her not to bother him. She kept saying she didn't know what she did with the coupon I gave her, although she checked me out less than 5 minutes earlier with only one other customer after me.

The cashier finally retrieved the coupon and the second cashier tried to help her by showing her which barcode to scan. The first cashier scanned the barcode several times but said it was rejected because it had already been scanned.

At one point, the cashier said she could run my whole purchase as a return and then try to redo the purchase. But, it would take a couple of days for my purchase to be credited back to my debit card (I would be paying double, with no guarantee I would be credited for the return). Also, she already stated the coupon could not be scanned again.

I was in a lot of pain and weak from hunger, so I finally left the store without a resolution. At home, I completed the survey about my experience at biglotssurvey.com and gave a detailed account of why I was giving my experience at Big Lots a low rating.

I have not heard from a customer service representative, but received another email today linking to the same coupon and stating there are only 4 days left to use the coupon. Big Lots bigwigs are deluded if they think I'm going to be lured back to the store to make another minimum $20 purchase so I can use a coupon that likely will be rejected again at checkout. I cannot afford to do that and will not shop at a retailer that uses dishonest practices.
