I bought a Comcast modem in June, 2017 to avoid the leasing charges from Comcast. The modem worked perfectly.

However, after 3 months I noticed that I was still getting a leasing charge although I returned my original modem to Comcast.  I called Comcast to inquire why I was still being charged for this modem.  I was told that the modem I purchased from BYOM (buy your own modem.com) was owned by Comcast.

I subsequently contacted BYOM to request a refund or replacement. They said they could not do that unless I had written proof from Comcast that the modem in question was actually their own.  None of the Customer Service agents I spoke with over several calls could provide me with this proof.

I wrote to the Comcast president's office for help.  An agent referred me a "escalation" agent who after 2 weeks provided me with the proof I needed.

I re-contacted BYOM with this proof and they authorized a return.  I returned the Comcast-owned modem and instead of a refund, they sent me a much used separate modem and router (although the one I purchased was a combined unit).  This was definitely not what I requested and so I requested a refund.

In fairness to BYOM, after 2 weeks they did send me a full refund.  Keep in mind that this entire process took 8 months just to get a simple refund for an issue that was not the buyer's fault.

As other posters have said, BYOM only sells "refurbished" units that are only listed in small print on the bottom of the item's description.  They do not have a customer service phone number, only an email address.  This problem with them could have more easily resolved with a phone call as opposed to numerous emails.

If you want to avoid hassles such as the one I experienced, do not buy from BYOM.
