Be wary of any purchases made on board cruise ships. Recently purchased a digital camera for $149.95 while sailing on Celebrity Cruises only to find it online for $89.99. Celebrity would not admit to overpricing customers but they sure overcharged me!

Where's the ripoff?

AUTHOR: Flynrider - (U.S.A.)

Things that are sold to a captive consumer are always priced higher. It's not like you could have asked the cruise ship to pull over to the nearest Best Buy so you could get off and buy a camera. As for Internet prices, the only place you get those are on the Internet (and half of those are bait and switch bogus prices).

The Celebrity Cruises did not force you to buy a camera aboard ship. Most people bring their own cameras with them. The cruise line is not in the consumer electronics business. They have those cameras for sale mostly as a courtesy, in case yours is lost, broken or stolen. You should expect to pay a premium price when you buy a digital camera in the middle of an ocean. It's just common sense.

That's ridiculous

Stores can charge whatever they want to for something. You then decide if you want to pay it or not. Do you think all stores charge the same for anything?

It's called a freemarket system. You need to research and do your homework if you want the cheapest price.

Not a ripoff

Me Too

They charged me $2.99 for a pair of toe nail clippers that I could have bought at wal-mart for 99 cents. Talk about a rip off. But I sure did need those toe nail clippers. Why didn't you just buy the camera online? Oh wait, you were in the middle of the ocean and couldn't wait. Did you not think you might want to take some pictures on the cruise? I did see those disposable cameras for sell.

So?

Where is the RipOff. If you could have gotten it for $89.99 on-line then why didn't you buy it BEFORE you went on the cruise?

You obviously don't travel a lot or go to many "tourist" attractions. In the days of actual film, a roll of film at a regular store would run $2-$3, at a tourist attraction where they "have you" that same roll of film would run you $7-$10. If you fly on a plane you can buy a candy bar for $3, that is the same thing you can buy at a grocery store for about $1. On a more local level, if you go to a movie do you really think that that $5 soda is any different than the $1-$2 soda you can get at a fast food resturant?

Plan ahead and you can save money. If you don't plan ahead you either won't be able to do something(like take pictures), or decide to pay the price they are selling it for. In the end that is YOUR choice.
