As a strong beleiver in credit card use without interest charges, I prefer to make payments electronically to be sure they arrive by the due date. I pay all of my cards this way, and have never had a problem, UNTIL NOW!

This morning I needed to make a payment of $11.44 on my Chase Platinum Mastercard, since it was due tomorrow. I logged on to the Chase site, and proceeded to the page for paying online. To my surprise, there were two options:
1) Make a payment online - Takes 2 - 5 days to clear.
2) Make a payment online today - $14.95 will be charged to your account!

Needless to say I was flabberghasted. To make matters worse, the second option would automatically enroll you in one of their screwy "programs" for some monthly fee!

I decided to try making the payment by phone, and found that the charge is the same. Since they had over the proverbial barrel, I had to accept the charge. Any other choice would have resulted in a late payment, and that is unacceptable.

I spoke to a customer service rep. who said he was "sorry" for the charge, whatever that means. I told him I would never use the account again, nor would I do business with Chase or any affiliate in the future.

Bottom line, folks is this. Citibank; Bank of America; Bank One;

Capital One and Discover Card do not do this. They all (including Chase!!) constantly e-mail you about the advantages of paying online. IT'S TIME TO CHOP UP YOUR CHASE CARDS! I did and it felt right!

#2 Consumer Comment

Are you sure this is a rip-off?

I think that it is safe to assume that you might have recieved your statement at least 10 working days before the payment was due, and I was wondering why you waited till it was due to make it. Escecially since the amount was $11.44. I do agree that the amount of $14.95 is a little much for a $11.44 balance, but you made a mistake and waited till the last moment to make it. And you have to pay for the convience of doing it on-line or over the phone. Would you be making a fuss if the amount owed was $1144.00? EVERYBODY has to pay for the little conviences in life. Did you ever wonder why gas prices are always higher at the busy intersections, or just off the interstate? For the convience of it. Or why 1 gallon of milk is less that 2 half gallons? Convience. I think next time you recieve a bill you won't wait till it is almost due to make it. Have a pleasent '05.

#1 Consumer Suggestion

Chase and Bank One are the same company now.

They merged this fall. The new company seems to be picking the most consumer-unfriendly terms of both to use. But it has always cost to have Chase take an online payment for the next day. Instead, I use the bill pay from my bank. You do have to plan ahead since that takes two days for no particular reason. It is a good idea to pay the minimum payment as early as possible. Then pay more to pay off the balance later when you have it. If you are late with that payment, you won't incur a late charge or damage to your credit rating. Of course you will "fall from grace" and have to pay interest.

The new Chase now has "two cycle billing." The best I understand it that means that if you switch from paying in full to carrying a balance, they will also apply interest from the month before last, which was previously forgiven. Chase, especially the new Chase, is not for those who are going to have a long-term debt commitment. Always be ready to pay in full so you can get out. This is really true of any card. As soon as they see you aren't able to vote with your feet, they will nail you.

I have a Chase card and always pay it in full. Once I was two days late because I was confused about the due date. They did forgive the late charge after I asked them to. I'm not sure if the new Chase would do that.

So scratch Bank One off the list of recommended cards as well, they're the same as Chase. Capital One and Discover have always been in a different league (bush) than the prime banks. Don't get a Capital One card, especially if you're qualified for MBNA, Citi, BoA or even Chase.
