My neurologist had written me a script to have a night guard type device made to keep my jaws from being able to move durring the night while I slept(because I grit my teeth in my sleep, and this was causing severe headaches, and also causing my teeth to wear down). While living a Tampa, I had used the Coast Dental location in Brandon, so when I moved to south Lakeland, and saw they also had a location there, I thought I would just give this location a try, since they were on my company's insurance plan. I explaned that I had the script from my doctor, and exactly what I needed to the receptionist on the telephone when I set up my first appointment.
Well, at that first appointment, they did x-rays, and took impressions of my teeth, to fit me for the device. They also told me that they would need to set me up for a "Deep Cleaning" which was the flouride rinse, and a therapy instrument (electric toothbrush, for which I refused.
I paid them $165.00 that day, and they told me that they would be filing the paperwork with Blue Cross/Blue Shield (my insurance company at the time) and that I sould get some of that money back from the insurance company. I had to return a week later to pick up the device, and have it fitted. Well, this device, was a piece of rubber that fit over my top teeth only, and they proceeded to tell me they didn't even have a case to put the thing in, so I had to wear it home. Once my doctor saw the thing, he laughed, and said how do they think this was what he had written the script for, there was no way this piece of rubber would keep my jaws from moving durring sleep. I returned to Coast Dental and explained that this wasn't what the doctor wanted.
They said that I was stuck with it, and by the way my insurance company wouldn't pay for it, because it wasn't the correct device. So, now I am stuck with this rubber piece of crap that is of no use to me at all. That's not the best part, they had the nerve to bill me an additional $300.00 for the thing, since the insurance company didn't pay.
I've called them, and they say that I am responsible since I signed the paperwork allowing them to make the device. I have no intentions to pay them any more money, so they keep seding me bills, and I keep putting them through the shreader machine. I am sure that one of these days, they will turn it over to a collections or something, and it will threaten to hurt my credit. So, I do need to talk to an attorney I guess to see if I can do anything about it, and maybe even make them take the worthless thing back and maybe even get a refund of what I have already paid.
I have since started going to another dentist in the area which I really like, and I found out from his office, that Coast also did't disclose serious problems to me which were in the x-rays I had them to forward to the new dentist. I had bone deteration in my jaws which was caused from peridontal disease, as well as my teeth grinding, and they failed to tell me this, I guess because I would need to go to a specialist for treatment, and they wouldn't be able to try to get me to come back for their "Deep Cleaning" program at the $1200.00 fee for which they were trying to talk me into.
I am sorry this was so long, but I hope it will help someone to not make the same mistakes I did.

Lots of Coast Complaints

I live in St. Augustine and was just looking for a dentist. Humana One dental plan offers Coast as one of two providers in my area. I googled "Coast Dental Complaints St. Augustine." There are so many real complaints against this company from so many valid complainants all over Florida, like this one, that I will NEVER make an appointment with them. Coast dental truly seem like thieves, with some really incompetent "dentists."
Seems like most of these so-called dental plans all have the WORST dentists in the world as providers! Instead of wasting money on some worthless policy with horrible dentists, I will call QUALITY dentists and ask them to honor the discount rate. The economy has been brutal to dentists also, so they will likely match an alleged insurance discount, even without having a policy.
Thank you Rip Off Report for saving me from a lot of problems once again!

For starters the dentist should have had written contact and verbal communication with your neurologist so that you got what you needed. This provision of contact should have been provided by you by supplying your neurologist with the dentist direct email address to transfer medical info for purpose, specific function, and design of device needed. If your child wants cerial do you just pick any box on the shelf or do you in fact make an assessment concerning nutrition and your childs personal taste? Perhaps cerial is a much more important decision over your concern for dental devices.
Secondary, why did you think you were getting a "deep cleaning"? There are two types that I know of, and neither one is a rinse. Perhaps being more inquizative might have helped you solve your own problem. Deep cleanings are prescribed for people with gum problems, which left untreated could result in bone loss OR sometimes some degree of boneloss has already occured. Questions like these could have been most helpful: "Why did I have a full series of x-rays? and what is your full analysis from reading the films of my teeth?", "Why did you determine that I needed this cleaning? How will I be affected long term if I defer treatment? Is it time sensitive that I make a decision, now that I fully understand what is happening?" I think everyone needs to feel ultimately responsible to UNDERSTAND the hows and whys and AID AND ASSIST the connections between our doctors. At the point we live life away from mommies and daddys, it is time to be informed and assess the quality of our care rather than forging blindly ahead and inadvertantly blaming everyone else.
Take responsibility for results in your life, which means pick good doctors, ask questions, and make sure everyone in your doctor realm is communicating with each other. By the way, you could have asked for ins codes of these services and called the insurance company yourself to see what is covered- ultimatley the bill is your responsibility if you don't do your own homework. It's like school, they don't hand out A's simply for showing up.

You were told you need a deep cleaning but.... You weren't told you have periodontal disease???

Ok first I want to say I worked for coast dental as a hygienist for quite a while. Coast was a great employer and I left for personal reasons. Coast has one of the best periodontal programs in the dental field. As a hygienist it is very hard to get patients to take responsibility for the condition that their mouth is in. The lady said that she was told she needed a deep cleaning but healthy mouths don't need deep cleanings. I know for a fact if she was told she needed a deep cleaning they explained to her why and found bone loss on her x-rays. The toothbrush is recommended because it has been clinically studied to give great results and is not required and is optional and patients are told that at the very first appointment. I now work in a periodontal office and we follow the same principal belief as coast and do the same type of treatments on periodontal patients. We also have the surgical option for therapy also. The hygienists that work in perio offices have the same degree as the ones that work in general dental offices. Hygientists specialize in periodontal disease!!!! I can't speak about the mouth guard situation except that if they took impressions then you got a regular mouthguard and it sounds like you needed something to keep your jaw from moving at all during sleep.
